Do any of you have any success with the cholesterol lowering drinks and the like that are available? My levels are a bit high, and even with the change in diet don't seem to be coming down as quickly as I would like and the doctor is considering giving me statins. I see brands like Benecol that offer these benefits, but I don't know if they really work.

I don’t use them, but they do seem to have a reliable effect on lowering total cholesterol, but I’ve no idea how they affect the the HDL/LDL ratio, which is the thing that’s important.

Sure, give them a try. It’ll impress the GP.🙂

I have used Benetol and both Aldi's amd Morrisons home brand. I don't know how effecitve they where my cholesterol but it dropped from 7.8 to 3 at the last count. I am sure they aided that some how. I also used to use the Proactiv Milk. See no harm in trying them at all.

The last thing I read about them was that while they may have a small effect on cholesterol levels they actually have no effect, and possibly associate with slightly worse CVD outcomes.

I stopped considering them after that.

Thanks. It's all confusing really but I like to know people's own experiences with them.

I just stick to oily fish. These cholesterol lowering drinks tend to lower total cholesterol which isn't necessarily a good thing. It's all about the ratios. My total chol. last check was a GP unfriendly 7.2, but the ratios are spot on, so no statins required.🙂
