does anyone else find that when they are hyper that they sometimes crave sweet food? it's usually chocolate or ice ream for me. or am i more mad than i first thought lol.

Disgustingly sweet tea is my problem at the moment. Oh well, it helps me get through the day so I don't protest haha. That and hot chocolate too.

i know, i don't want to eat, but i just get this mad urge to, but realistically i don't actually want it. don't know quite how to explain myself lol

I think this is because your brain thinks that you are starving - if you are hyper then your body doesn't have enough insulin to get the glucose from your blood into your cells so it puts out the signal to make you crave sugar.

I'd agree with that. Before diagnosis, when I was probably high most of the time, I definitely craved fizzy sugary drinks. 2L bottle remains littered my kitchen! 😱

I'm the opposite way: I have the most intensive urge to gorge myself when hypo. It's quite a struggle to resist emptying the fridge of all chocolate 😱

I have this too, I think my comfort eating tendancies kick in too, I feel rough so somehow I think eating will make everything better - doh!!!

I have also experienced this, but not so much now as my body is used to better readings, above 12 and i start to feel the effects of the high, which are not too severe even now....🙂

Before she was dx K would come home from school and have

a large slice of homemade fruit cake
a fruit corner yogurt
a nutrigrain cereal bar
large glass of high juice (full sugar) squash

for a SNACK😱

She still ate her (large) evening meal later, with a large glass of fruit juice, then had a large glass of milk and a biscuit at bedtime.

All this and she was still loosing weight which the doc said was 'her age'

(We now realise her body was desperately trying to get carbs but wasnt able to use them - she could have been called 'Little Miss Ketones' 😱)

YES! I crave sweet drinks usually. And I usually can't stop myself from drinking milk for some reason...

Prior to diagnosis (quite a while prior, as I was LADA, unknowingly) I could happily drink 30 pints of milk a week, presumably because of the thirst that high levels bring, but also because I craved the sweetness 😱

I can't say I have ever craved sweet things when I am hyper, if I try to eat I feel sick - I think it mush be my body's way of telling me to stop!!
I did have the milk drinking thing before I was diagnosed though but now I can't stand milk! I was so thirsty I used to take 3 bottles of water to school and fill up at leats 3 times a day and I didn't even think there was anything wrong with me! I also used to love being around water - having a bath and even going swimming which is strange.

I used to drink loads of milk too and loads of fruit juice. Not so much of the fizzy drinks or squash though. It never even occurred to me that there was anything odd in that. In the last weeks before I collapsed I wasn't eating very much at all, as I recall I wasn't much interested in food but I'd get through a 2 litre bottle of milk and at least a litre of fruit juice in a day. I had no idea how ill I was, I thought I was 'just' depressed because I'd been out of work for so long.

milk seems to be a favourite then! i can't stand the stuff, but if it was the only think to drink bfore i was diagnosed, or before i go to hospital with dka, i would guzzle the stuff! i don't think milk tastes particualarly sweet. but i always preferred cold drinks. I can easily go through a 2 litre bottle of anything in 10 minutes when i'm hyper.

At the moment i'm finding it really difficult not to nibble in-between meals. I'm not eating chocolate, sweets or crisps, but it's a handful of nuts, some cheese, couple of rich tea biscuits.
