Since going down with a heavy cold a few weeks ago, which cleared up after a couple of weeks, I have been coughing and coughing away (including all the yummy stuff like green phlegm). Today I saw the dr who says I have a chest infection and has put me on antibiotics. They are Clarithromycin - has anyone been on these? One of the 'rare' side affects is low BG which I'm a bit worried about, but not overly. Just wondering if anyone saw any impact on their BGs because of the antibios?

I would have expected to have high BGs due to an infection but they haven't been any different - thanking my lucky stars for that!

Thanks 🙂

BNF states that hypoglycaemia is a very rare side effect. I've probably been on it myself. Clarithromycin is effectively a beefed up version of erythromycin which seems to raise my BG. To be fair the stress response which triggers off cascade of hormones which includes glucagon will more likely than not cancel out any hypoglycaemia.

Hope you're feeling much better soon Shiv 🙂

Hee hee Shiv - my mate - a nurse - told me yonks ago to always inspect the colour of what you cough up! - if it's any colour except white, it's a chest infection so off to the docs immediately.

Revolting though it is, I always look now!

Shiv hope you are better soon
love and hugs coming your way

Shiv, I hope the infection clears soon. I have just had a 10 day course of antibiotics and a steriod injection for bronchitis and it has all played havoc with my bs. Day I had injection I was at 21. Struggled to get below 15+ been a right nightmare. Antibiotics leaflet is in Spanish so couldn't read side effects.

Take care and get well soon x

Get well soon Shiv.

get well soon

I hope you are feeling better and your levels are behaving. I find antibiotics (any of them) up my levels and a few upset my tummy for a few days. No harm in pestering your doctor if you're worried.

I'm back am, was popping co-codimal on holiday for 5 days before I saw a DR. Was shocked when he said I had bronchitis - over worst of it now x

Thanks everyone, I had a 2.6 at midnight but think that's more likely to be linked to the massive amounts of insulin I had yesterday (I ate loads).

Wish I could take time off but I literally can't - there is noone to cover the stuff that *has* to be done this week (exhibiting at a conference, writing certain letters, etc). I'm working shorter days and desperately trying to find someone to cover the conference for me but noone is available :(

Shiv i hope u getter soon 🙂 im off to dr's to get some antibiotics this thursday as ive held off fer 2 weeks getting them for my chest infection 😉 lol
