It was mentioned a while back but I can't remember by whom. Hopefully they will be along soon and be able to help. In the mean time perhaps a google search may help?

I know exactly what it is now having been through a bit of a trauma in the last couple of months. I guess I was just really looking for someone with the same problem. Thanks Sue

I remembered the post as I had seen a vascular surgeon a few days before. My GP referred me back in March as my pulses, and a subsequent Doppler, were none to good. I have to go back in nine months unless there is cause for concern. The surgeon said that diabetes was an unpleasant disease not taken seriously enough by many. His therory was that bad circulation with raised blood sugar levels causes the nerve damage by reducing nutrients reaching the nerves. This is also what causes Charcots.

Charcots

Thanks Stephen. Until a couple of months ago I was happily oblivious to Charcot. I had a swollen foot which I had been to the doctors twice about (not interested - its warm, feet swell, here have these water tablets). Eventually when my foot actually started changing shape which is caused by the bones shifting I went back to my doctor who diagnosed a fallen arch. Recommended I wore insoles to support the arch and sent me to see a podiatrist for bespoke inserts. All kicked off last week when podiatrist said not fallen arch, x-rayed it and started using this Charcot word. Long story lots of other consultants involved and my foot is now in plaster for the foreseeable future which is how they deal with Charcot apparently. Needless to say I am taking up the case of my useless GP with the local primary care trust. PS this guy is the so called 'diabetic expert' at our surgery.

Hi Susieb,

I was wondering if you had neuropathy and circulation problems. After decades of diabetes these seem to have crept up on me this year. I am now worrying that I may have Charcots as I have some swelling but my GP says it is the new BP medication he prescribed. I think I will raise it with him.

Hi Stephen

Yes apparently quite severe neuropathy according to what I learnt in the last week or so. I've been diabetic for about 16 years and during the last year or so have had a 'thick' sort of feeling in my feet which is down to neuropathy. I started off with swollen foot however the foot then changed shape as the bones shifted and because of the lack of feeling I was walking on it and causing more fractures etc etc. Do you have pain with the swelling? Mine was really sore and I didn't realise I was walking on broken bones. If I were to go through it all again I would definitely would have demanded an x-ray when my doctor saw me first - fallen arch is what he diagnosed !!! If you are in the least worried I would insist on an x-ray
