Changing from Lantus to Levemir

I'm just wondering what people's experience has been if they have changed from 1 injection of Lantus a day to Levemir and splitting it in to 2 injections a day?

I was moved to Levemir recently and I use the same dose as I did with Lantus but obviously now split in to 2 injections. But my BG is much higher than it used to be on Lantus.

Is Levemir not as strong or something? Did anyone else find this, and did they have to increase their Levemir?
 
A few days after I swopped I needed more levermir. Gradually increased by a unit every couple of days. The hard bit was getting the split right. Mine's not even. I have much more in the morning than at night.
 
Yes as i've been seeing on this forum those that take Levemir seem to take more in the morning than evening. I guess i'll work out my requirements soon enough.
 
I only take 1 dose of Levemir at night. Haven't needed to split my dose yet.
 
I think in my case splitting is the way to go.

My recent HbA1c was 7.0% but they seem to think it's down to the fact i'm going low too much now. So although it's at a good level, in fact the best it's ever been, the reason it's low is not so good.

But i'm on DAFNE in September so hopefully moving to Levemir and going on DAFNE will help a lot.

They also think I will gain some weight after moving to Levemir and doing DAFNE, but I think i will only believe that when I see it.

If you're accurately matching your insulin to your carb intake and not over-eating, there is absolutely no reason why you should gain weight.

It makes me so angry how medical professionals always seem to have no real clue whatsoever and perpetuate all these misconceptions -"you need lots of carbs, people with diabetes always gain weight, no-one should ever bother trying for a decent A1C because you'll have too many hypos"....it's like every doctor in the country went to a diabetes conference in 1983 and never bothered to refresh their knowledge.
 
Not absolutely certain Deus, have a sneaky suspish that Clarkey might be the member who I recall needs to, but is having trouble GAINING weight!
 
Yes i'm the one that wants to desperately gain weight. So many people go on about losing weight when it can be just as hard if not harder to gain weight.

I just find it hard to believe that if I get perfect control after doing DAFNE that it will improve my weight. I know my body better than anyone.

If your levels are running high then you could be losing precious weight-gaining calories because your body is unable to use the glucose and you are peeing it away, making it very hard to gain weight. Perhaps if you can get really good control then hopefully you will gain weight until you are at a good, stable weight for you. I was hugely underweight at diagnosis, but eventually put it on and am at a very stable weight now with a BMI of around 22-23. (It was 17! 😱)
 
I don't know what my BMI is but I know i'm underweight. I don't think i'll get really good control until i've been on DAFNE which is only 2 months away. But even after DAFNE I don't know how easy it will be.
 
According to that my BMI is 17.26 :(

In that case, I know just how you feel, having been there myself! Interestingly, though, when I was 25 my BMI was 17-18 - I could eat a horse between two bread vans and not gain a single pound! As the decades have passed by I've gained some flesh on my bones, but I did return to that skinny 25 year old at diagnosis 🙂

Yeah went off the radar for a bit, but since changing to Levemir this week it brough me back.

It's going to be a struggle getting this right. Look at this:

4th July: 22:40 (bed time) = 8.1 I'm happy with that. No longer doing background at bedtime so it's wierd just getting in to bed without doing an injection, keep feeling I've forgotten something.

5th July: 05:27 (breakfast) = 8.7 So stayed pretty much stable, but a little higher than i'd like. Took 5u of NovoRapid for breakfast.

8am took 12u of Levemir.

12:38 (lunchtime) = 3.0 Way too low. Had lunch to bring it back up with a NovoRapid jab.

19:00 (dinner time) = 10.7 ok went a bit too far. Took a NovoRapid jab of 9u for dinner.

20:00 took 12u of Levemir.

22:17 (shortly before bed) = 14.2 Ok too high, but I went to bed on it, no jab or anything.

6th July: 08:09 (breakfast, bit later because off work) = 14.3 OMG ok so it stayed stable again but way too high.

08:09 took 12u of Levemir.

08:30 took 6u of NovoRapid for breakfast. (forgot to add unit(s) for correction).

13:14 (lunchtime) = 4.0 - ok little low and I felt it too.

Had lunch, baked beans on toast, was pretty lazy. beans is 44g per can and 2 slices of bread. I took 6u for lunch.

15:34 = 2.9 ????

So i'm confused by this and I guess it's to do with my Levemir units?
 
My BMI is 16.8. But that is my 'normal' weight and height. Like Northerner could, I can eat absolutely anything I want and won't put on the tiniest bit of weight. Which frustrates me at times as I'd like to have more weight on me. Seems like I'll always be thin as a rake.

When diagnosed my BMI was just under 15 😱

From looking at your results there, it would appear that your morning levemir is too many units and your evening levemir keeps your levels stable through the night, so it might help to correct high levels before bed with novorapid.

Wait until you are in your 50s! 😱 🙂 I have put on a stone a decade since my 20s.
