Hi I've just been diagnosed Type 2, just saying Hello and I'm hoping this forum will help me with all the lifestyle changes ahead. Currently craving beer and chocolate oh dear!
Welcome. I was diagnosed 3 months ago and this Forum has been wonderful with so many helpful members. Also the online training videos. Yes, know all about the cravings. I do have the occasional strip of 85% dark chocolate sweetened with Stevia. I actually find it very nice and rich. Resisted so far today!
My local Lidl has had 95 percent cocoa chocolate for the last couple of weeks - under 13 percent carbs, so not far out of range for me.
I can't help with the 'real' beer, but I make ginger beer, ferment it to dryness and add an artificial sweetener when I pour it
It might seem daunting at first, but it can be conquered with any luck. I am almost exactly 3 years from diagnosis and have had normal number for most of that time .
Hi I can recommend a beer called Michelob Ultra, its low carb and low calorie and it even tastes good. I've also seen Skinny beer in tesco which is also low carb. Give them a try they are ok. Good luck.
I like your name, reminds me of my favourite Rod Stewart track. My daughter bought me two of his CDs on the strength of that and the track wasn't on either of them.
Hello Lady Jane, welcome to the forum, and to the club that no-one wants to join!
You're probably a bit shocked and confused, and worried at the moment, so let me try to reassure you
Yes, you will have to make some changes, but it's not too difficult once you've got the hang of things, and you can live a fairly normal healthy life
What a coincidence about chocolate!
I was diagnosed 20 years ago, and have more or less stopped having chocolate. I tried just limiting myself to one or two squares, or one choccy biccy bit it was no use, I always ended up having too much. But that was the usual everyday chocolate, where even the dark chocolate is quite sweet and moreish
I had seen, on & off, forum members mention high cocoa dark chocolate, but never got round to trying it
However, yesterday I was shopping in LIDL and bought a couple of bars
I couldn't remember the exact types or brands recommended, but I got Fin Carre Finest Dark Chocolate, 74% cocoa, and J D Gross Dark Chocolate, 85% cocoa. There were a few others, but you've got to start somewhere
I've had just one square of each, and I'm impressed. They have a strong chocolate taste, but without that sickly sweetness, and I found that one square was quite enough to satisfy me, I didn't feel like having any more
As I said, they had different types, and other supermarkets will have their own, it's just a question of finding what suits you
One thing that will help is that over time your taste will alter; you will get used to things that are not so sweet, and find that things you used to love become too sickly and overwhelming.
In the near future I'll look through some old Threads & Posts, and try different types, and settle on the best choices
