Well it was my birthday on Thurs so I am now 'a year older'... and unfortunately my diabetes is not a year wiser! I had my first session of mini 2 hr carb counting course on Weds and I was NOT taught a single thing I didn't already know :( Then had a bit of a breakdown on the DSN running it (not my usual DSN who I can't get hold of for love nor insulin) as I asked to speak to her one to one at the end as I've had enough of feeling rubbish EVERY single day and not getting any support from my diabetes team :( and her excuse for the poor care I'm receiving is that they're understaffed, and I know that's not the nurses' fault, but it's certainly not my fault either!! Anyway, I showed her my diary and she said it was fine, just needs some fine tuning (god knows I've been trying) and that when I'm high I just have to ignore it and move on - I'd like to see her manage that if I injected her with sugar! I'm not sure if anyone can do that but no matter what I try I can't just forget when my sugars are high as I get so frustrated with life, plus we want to start a family and I'll never get my hba1c down at this rate!!!! But looking at my diary now as I'm 17.7 and in irrational 'I hate life' mode... and there is not one day where I've not been 14+ at some point from January, and that can be morning, lunchtime, evening or night!!!! I don't think it's a case of just upping my doses as there are hypos thrown in there as well, and although some of the highs look like rebounds there doesn't seem to be a pattern to anything... I really can't take much more of this as I am trying so unbelievably hard and no-one seems to care!

xx

Sorry to hear you're feeling low Vix, but happy birthday 🙂

I know it's easy for me to sit here and type but try and keep your head up and focused, have you tried getting one of those CGM machines or thought about a pump, it works for some, but I know it's a real slog (but shouldn't be) to get them and get funding. Keep on here and the guys and gals here will help as best they can.

Take care Vix.

Cheers

Rossi. 🙂

I dont think i have ever had a pattern after 47 yrs 😱 Some nhs staff read books and think we all the same. Take care vix & keep on testing for britain. Stress does me in (low bgs) 😉

Hi Vix, belated happy birthday🙂 Sorry to hear you're feeling fed up, I can certainly identify with that feeling - looking after your D is so relentless and it's really disheartening when your hard work doesn't seem to be reflected in your BG's. Not helped by the feeling of isolation that comes from having an unsupportive clinic team.

Have you got Gary Scheiner's "Think Like a Pancreas"? I have been to a few of Gary's lectures and he has some great tips for tightening up control. When we are going through a difficult patch (ie even more difficult than the usual!), I try to simplify things for a while by sticking to very similar meals (carb types and amounts), eaten at regular times. Then I can look at the BG trends without having to think "but that day he had pasta, and that day he ate early, etc" and it becomes easier to see the wood for the trees.

When your DSN says ignore the highs and move on, I would say don't beat yourself up about them, but of course don't ignore them (what is she on?!!) - correct them straight away and consider why they may have happened (e.g. Does a meal ratio need changing or did you under calculate the carbs, etc.). You are obviously doing a great job to get the Hba1c you already have, so hang in there! 🙂

Sorry to hear you are not getting much help (if any!). It is so frustrating, especially when you are told to ignore the highs. I have been given this advice too though, sometimes the highs will correct themselves quite quickly whereas if you corrected you could end up with a hypo - high - hypo situation (something that tends to happen to me when correcting). If these highs are happening everyday though you obviously need help. Is there another nurse you can see, maybe at your gp practice? I'm lucky in that I now have a brilliant DSN, for years though getting hold of one was impossible. Keep at it, keep testing, you'll get there.
