I'm finding that N is having a massive spike in the morning after breakfast. I'm wondering if it's the cereal I'm giving her. We're not carb counting at the moment, and her morning insulin has been reduced a bit because she was having a hypo at school almost every day before breaktime.

Now she's definitly not hypo and is often around the 11/12/13 mark. School are checking BG at breaktime at the moment as well as lunch, because of the previous hypos.

Spoke to the DSN tonight and she said because of the previous lows they don't want to change her morning insulin at the moment (I don't really want this either) however I also don't want these continued highs either.

Any ideas?

What cereals is she having? Some supposed 'good' choices can actually cause a bit of a spike, but it can be very dependent on the individual.

she's been having Sainsburys own version of rice krispies ( Rice Pops) She had toast this morning so we'll see what happens.

Many cereals are difficult for me. Actually most cereals are pretty iffy, but then I do struggle with levels after breakfast.

The good thing abour cereals is that they are so easy to carb count. Just pop the bowl on some scales and alow a little for the milk. That way you eliminate one of the variables since you know that she always has x grams in the bowl.

What are her levels like at lunchtime? If she's coming down from 11/12/13 to a decent in-range figure before lunch then it suggests the amount of cereal is not too far off, but the timing of the insulin's avtivity vs the cereal's peak aren't matching. It might simply be a case of injecting and then leaving it a short while (10, 15, 20 minutes, maybe more?) before eating the cereal to give the insulin a little 'head start' to get going.

Rice Pops hit my BG reeeeeeally fast. They are in the high GI category I think (70 or 80). This may well be why the insulin activity is late, it just can't keep up with the speed of the carbs into the bloodstream. Toast (especially if you can persuade her to have a seedy or stoneground wholemeal type bread) may well be a better option.
