Do you like dark chocolate?
Dark chocolate contains less sugar so is preferred by many on the forum with type 2 diabetes.
It goes nicely with a glass of red wine.
Yes, I'm getting used to dark chocolate although I still prefer milk chocolate. Thank you for your info, much appreciate.

Aldi do a range of dark chocolate bars at a very reasonable cost. Their 85% one seems to be well tolerated by a lot of people with D.
Yes, I have these ones and a bonus with them is that each 2 squares are individually wrapped for easy portion control and are just over 5g carbs.

I joined this forum a few weeks ago, after being diagnosed with diabetes. I've started using my Freestyle Libre 2 yesterday and I'm learning to read my BG. This morning, after breakfast having eaten my favourite Alpen cereal, I was shocked to see a spike on my Libre (21.3).

The pack does say 'no added sugar' and my BG shot up!

I'm slim but I LOVE eating because I'm always hungry. I'm a sweet-toothed, especially chocolate.

But, can anyone please suggest the best cereal to eat without spiking?

Thank you
I get the low sugar granola from Lidl and have it with Greek yoghurt also from Lidl , a 45g portion of the granola is 25g carbs. Doesn't really cause me a massive spike , but everyone is different.

Ok l'll give that a try. I might be a bit more adventurous and have some chopped up fresh fruit with it.
Thanks!

I was thinking about this low sugar thing everyone talks about. Maybe I am completely wrong but I ignore tge sugar low or otherwise, I simply go by carbs

I absolutely agree but sometimes things labelled as low sugar can be lower carb but not necessarily so.
I use Lizi's low sugar granola but have been puzzled by the fact that the carbs vary between ones labelled as low sugar depending on where you buy from e.g from Costco 45g carbs per 100g, but elsewhere 56g per 100g. They also do others high protein at 40g per 100g.
So you do need to look carefully and not assume.

Don't forget that a lot of guesswork goes into aassigning carb contents so the value on the side of the packet will depend a bit on who is doing the guessing.

Yes LL I agree with you. My options are a tad limited as I have to have all my groceries delivered, so I shop online which does give plenty of time to read the labels. I have actually read food labels for years long before I became diabetic, although these days I get bored with it. We don't have the benefit of Ocado and the like in south-west Scotland, just .tesco, Morrisons, sainsbury and ASDA, the latter I never use. There are in the nearest town, LIDL and ALDI of course. I bought rough porridge oats this week and lots of mixed nuts and seeds, the nuts I use when I'm peckish, but I want to make my own granola type cereal perhaps in bulk once I find the recipe as I'm not sure if you can roast the porridge in the oven or hob, and if ok to do so with rapeseed oil, trial and error. I always have loads of natural Greek yoghurt in my fridge too. Fingers crossed I make it good

Yes I do a lot of guessing, wrongly sometimes LoL

Hi, I know everyone has their good and bad days, well I'm having a very bad phase at the present time. Since I had to resign from my job at the time my diagnosis five weeks ago, I still have not found another job, despite my best efforts. I've had two job interviews, with no response so far. It's not easy at all looking for work, that is non class 2 driving (bus/coach) I've been looking for work online for weeks, with very limited joy. I'm getting very despondent, as I have had no income since I stopped and finding it very hard financially. I feel so guilty because I'm living off my wife's income, which isn't good and unsustainable. It's so wrong.
I would be so grateful if anyone can offer any advice please.
Thanks.

Are you able to go back to the company you worked for and ask if there is anything they could offer you which does not involve driving, more on the admin side.
What about shelf stacking in a supermarket. I don't know what your skills are but what about any jobs at Reading Uni

No, my old manager won't have me back for anything but driving. Driving is out of the question ATM. I've only done driving work since I left school, so don't really have other skills, although I'm willing to learn If it's not too late.

So sorry to hear about you having such a tough time and I know that you have a very supportive other half and that is invaluable.
What about driving jobs but not involving carrying passengers so delivery jobs that your diabetes does not preclude you from.
Or as LL suggested working in a supermarket etc.As well as helping financially I feel the self esteem would be a big positive for yourself.

Coop 85% is also very good IME.

Sorry to read your story . Do you have Timpsons close to where you live? They have excellent employment policies.

Thank you Wendal I have applied to Royal Mail and had a successful interview with them. I know they are desperate for poeple to join them, I am now waiting for a response from soon. Also, I have applied to work for Waitrose HQ (in Bracknell, where I live) so that is another possibility. Also applied for a few other jobs. The worst part for me, is the waiting for responses.
I am so short of money and just cannot live off my wife's income, its wrong and I feel very guilty, I really don't know what to do. I have claimed job seekers allowance, but that takes time and even then, the DWP might say, I'm not entitled to it. I am in despair with my head in my hands. I'm so upset I now find myself in this situation.

Hi Sharron1, yes there is a Timpsons branch in my local town centre.
Thank you I will give them a try.

Thank you I will definitely give them a try.

When I first had my Libre I found that my usual breakfast of porridge sent my blood sugars into orbit, that took the rest of the morning to come back down. I started playing around with various “low carb” options, mainly from Holland & Barrett and whilst they were better than porridge the cost made them prohibitive on a day to day basis. So I plagiarised the recipe of the one I liked best and now make my own. It’s a mixture of nuts and seeds with a small amount of oats to add bulk. I take it with coconut milk. Keeps my BG readings within range most days. Happy to share recipe if anyone interested.
