Many type 2s use a blood glucose tester to see how well they cope with various meals, and then make adjustments to keep the increase to under 2mmol/l.
We are all different and so it works best if checked individually.
I have seen many reports that around 50gm of carbs a day has been a good choice for quite a few people, but which foods to chose is the key.

For somebody who is diagnosed as Type 2, that is their HbA1C is over 47mmol/mol then the suggested starting point for reducing carb is no more than 130g carbs not just sugar per day.
However some people find they need to go lower but that would be by being guided by a testing regime which indicates how much carb they can tolerate in their meals.
Some people may be more sensitive to carbs in the morning so will tend to have a low carb breakfast but can then tolerate more later in the day, equally some people are more sensitive to particular carbs so say a 20g portion of rice will not be good but 20g of bread will be OK
As everybody is different it is hard to give a categoric number of grams.
Have a look at this link as it will give you some ideas of where you can be making some modification to your diet. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/
As prediabetic some modest changes are probably all that is needed.
