Carbs per day?

sorry for yet another question. I’ve started my food diary today and am surprised to find that my carb intake is not as low as I has thought it was. Today it is 93, though 30 of that was my cornflakes which will be ditched. Any advice on roughly how many carbs a day I should be aiming for. Thanks very much.

Well I tried to keep it under 40g, but that Eatwell row locks says that per meal.

Everyone is different and you have to find what works for you as an individual. I don't do really low carb as I struggle to stick to it. I average between 100-150g a day.

It’s difficult isn’t it, not exactly sure what I’m aiming for other than getting bg’s down. Food diary is prompted by referral to dietician who can hopefully give me some answers and ideas.

I'm aiming for 80g/day; reasonably split between three meals with a biscuit with my evening brew. Works for me up to now but then everybody's different.

I got down to normal on no more than 50 gm per day - but it really helps to get hold of a glucose testing meter and check after meals to see what spikes you.
The foods I found more useful were all under 11 percent carbs - it means they are fairly bulky - salads, veges too, but legumes are surprising in that they seem to have more effect than their carb content would imply.
There are no grains, potatoes nor high sugar foods in my diet.

I don’t eat any sugary foods, sweet things have never been my thing, but unfortunately neither have veg though don’t mind salad. Think this diary will be good as it is highlighting the carbs, I do test as well. Seems to be taking ages for me to get anywhere near what others seem to be achieving, perhaps I’m impatient but thank you everyone for your comments

Unfortunately it is not just sugary foods which are the problem.
Low carb is usually a powerful blood glucose reducer - if it is not having that effect you could be low on insulin.

I think perhaps I haven’t been as low carb as I thought I was. My bg levels are not usually over 7/8 unless I’ve had something stupid (like my yummy cheese muffin) which is rare. I thought bg wise I wasn’t doing too bad but I will test more as have been a bit erratic with it. I’m having another HbA1c in just over a week and feel it will give a good indication of how I have been doing. Am a bit in the dark I feel. Appreciate the feedback

Finding that your carb intake is higher than you think but getting those figures - presumably 2 hours after meals? - that is good.
I found that once I was able to stay under 8mmol/l after meals my diet did not need further tweaking for levels to drop even lower. I think it was my metabolism recovering, so I stuck to what I was enjoying despite results being very erratic for a few weeks.
Once things settled down I felt really well, better than for a long time.

93 yesterday, 32 today o_Oo_O

It just shows how different everyone is. My target is 90g per day, with some ups and downs depending on what I am diong during the week. We usually hit the target when eating at home, but I am not so good when out for meals. I do the best I can.

I usually aim for 90-100 carbs a day and that seems to be ok with BGLs approx 6-7 ish. I am a bit nervous to make any changes to the diet in case it goes horribly wrong.I do wish I were better at Maths, my calculations are a bit rough.

Advice on ratios readily available.
It was amazing how good my classes got on calculating my insulin for my lunch.
It was their final puzzle at the end of the lesson.
Showed them that ratios did not always need to be whole numbers!!!!

I should have invited my first DSN into the lessons, as she struggled with anything that was not a multiple of 10. At the DAFNE course I was on she asked me what I was going to call 57g? I told her 57 g. She said that was too complicated to divid by 10. After that she asked me to do the calculations at the morning briefing we did each day.

Oh dear, bit worrying!!

I aim for 20g per day.
Often I end up with around 30 - 40g.
I was diagnosed with Type 2 in January and went onto a low carb diet immediately (around 40g per day) and a fortnight later progressed to trying to stick to keto because I wanted to slim down faster and I liked the look of the keto recipes and they'd be unhealthy if I was eating too many carbs.
Each HbA1c test since showed my levels dropping like a stone and today I got given a One Touch for me to get to know which foods may or may not cause me spikes and an hour or so after brunch the nurse showed me how it worked and my level was 5.9.
I'm on Metformin 500mg once a day and propranolol 40 mg once a day and propranolol 10mg as required as a top up if I'm under any major stress.
The medics seem quite pleased with my progress.
All my other tests for liver function and heart etc are fine.
Back in January I had signs of fatty liver disease but that is gone now too.
I don't weigh so no idea how much I weigh but I've dropped three dress sizes since January and I'm starting to look more like a human and less like a potato with clothes on - so that's good.

That sounds really good, don’t think there’s anyway I could get my carbs that low, though think I’m doing ok as my last HbA1c was reduced from 80 to 51. Well done on going down 3 dress sizes, I think I’ve probably gone down 1 but that’s enough for me. Can I ask what signs of fatty liver you had, did they test for it?

They did liver function and kidney function tests before the diagnosis as recommended for people on my regular medication long term. Then they checked it again after I'd been on metformin for a couple of months.

Thanks, haven’t had anything checked except my eyes and recent HbA1c. Doh!
