According to this site this is what it says about bread.

Granary bread 16 g. carbs. 78 cals. 1 g fat. 2 g. fibre.
White bread 15 g. carbs. 72 cals. 1 g fat. 1 g. fibre.

These are both or one medium slice.
So why are we advised to eat Granary bread?

The carbohydrate is more readily absorbed into the bloodstream from white bread than the granary (wholegrain) bread. Consequently, you are more likely to get a quick and higher peak than with the granary.

When I did a personal test of different types of bread a little while ago (still somewhere on this forum), my tests confirmed this effect (for me atleast).

Andy 🙂

Even better, eat Burgen Soya and Linseed bread, which has the seeds etc. but also lower carb at around 12g carbs per slice 🙂 This is because some of the (carby) flour is replaced with soya flour. White bread hits your levels faster than table sugar! 😱

Thanks for that info Andy. 🙂

Thanks for the info. What about brown wholemeal bread which is what I usually buy.🙄

I think brown wholemeal is not a great deal better than white, unfortunately. It is the seeds in granary or wholegrain that lower the GI of the bread. However, I can appreciate that not everyone can eat seeded bread as my Dad can't. Wholemeal probably has more goodness in it than white, if a good quality bread. 🙂 Personally, I've never understood the appeal of white bread, most of it is horrible in comparison to 'proper' bread!

I tried granary once and the slices were too thick. I couldn't find any medium or thin slices. I agree about white bread. The white bread my partner eats is like eating cotton wool. Its horrible.😉
