As type 1's can we have meals without carbs and how does that work with/without insulin? I was always under the impression I had to have carbs with every meal. Feel a bit daft asking 😱

Sorry, I have posted on the wrong board I know 😱

Yes you can have meals without carbs...

Has to insulin..

some will depend on whether you'll eating a lot of protein and a little to whether it's high fats as well..

If you are injecting you do need to work it out though as you need to be careful that your injection if you need insulin is well timed.. So you may have to inject your insulin after eating and maybe 30 minutes or so after eating, so the protein/fat has a chance to start to digest and start impacting on your blood glucose..

It's a game of testing before eating, then testing regularly after eating, starting from the 30 minute mark to see how your blood glucose behave's then working out if you need any insulin, how much and when best to inject it

Hi, If you have a no carb meal, you wouldn't need to take insulin with it. I was also told to always have carbs with a meal so that you can inject when I was diagnosed 8 years ago, it also depends what insulin you are on. What do you use?

Be careful though because some foods that I would consider low carb are not actually zero carb, for example if you have an omlette with salad, any dressing or sauce and things like sweetcorn do contain a small amount of carbs. Since I am on a pump, I would take a tiny amount to cover things like that, but a lot of people wouldn't bother.

Gosh what a revelation! I am on Novorapid 3 times a day and Lantus at night. I am gob smacked, truly!

In that case you could have a no carb meal and not take your novorapid for that meal. Test after the meal just incase!
