well we have a thread for low/no carbers and i just wanted to add my own thread for those wo do like and manage to be in range on levels with carbs 🙂

for me they form an integral part of every meal i have. i even have some form of carb for my supper as i feel it helps me through the night to remain stable 🙂

so what do you think/do in relation to your carbs???

who much do you eat on a daily basis???

I like some carbs through the day. Although I have cut my carb loading, I like some carbs during the day.

These days I go for more complex carbs like whole meal bread and whole grain rice and have cut down on the simple carbs like sugar and white flower.

I think we need some carbs as part of a balanced diet, and try to eat plenty of fruit and vege and whole grains and wholemeal and very little fat.

i only use wholemeal stuff and only use brown rice. i also have some fats in my diet, but try and rule out the bad fats. i eat plenty of fruit and veg and also have more than 5 portions a day lol

i believe that the body needs a little of everything to keep it going in top shape.

yes its personnal choice carbs or not. personally I eat carbs at every meal. I dont think its a good idea to reduce or have nil carbs if you are very active or exercise a lot.

I try to eat healthily and think im ok as cholesteral etc ok. i eat wholemeal bread, brown basmati rice , fruit and veg, maybe not 5 a day but i do try.

I do eat out and will have whatever i want, i eat puddings, crisps, biscuits, choc and alcohol, but try to keep in moderation. I dont see the point in depriving myself of vital and yummy nutrients, you only have one life, enjoy it whilst being as healthy as you can, 🙂

I do eat plenty of carbs and find through carb counting (via dafne) that I have as good, if not better, control as I did when I used to limit my carb intake.

I do a lot of exercise and know that my body performs better when I am eating carbs, it may also be that this exercise that helps me tolerate carbs better.

As for how many carbs I eat in a day, this can vary wildly but generally speaking I'll have cereal for breakfast totalling 40g, lunch when I'm working would be a sandwich so about 30g then dinner could be anything between 20g and up to 200g but I guess averaging around 90g.

Where possible I do try to stick to lower GI carbs but that isn't a hard and fast rule for me, I would always opt for white bread where possible for example.

my ammount of carbs per day can vary in a big way to. if i am training hard then i try and have a nice large ammount of carbs for every meal (usually about 160g-250g) on a normal day i have about 100-130g of carbs per meal (averaged out over the day as it will be less at breakfast but more with evening meal). i find that the exercise side of things also help me with the carbs and meens i dont have to "feed" the insulin.

i should really go back to low GI carbs, such as wholemeal flour, brown rice & pasta etc... I just slowly started having the higher GI food when my mum became less obsessive/aware of my diabetes and realised it wouldnt hurt to have 'white' stuff! But I realise that the spikes these foods cause might not be good in the long run.

As a Type 2, even though I have started reducing/managing my crbohydrate intake (hardly any in the morning, some at lunchtime and quite a lot in the evening), I've still managed to further reduce my HbA1c result which was down at my last test from 5.5% to 5.3%.

As a Type 1, I realise that your situation is very different to mine. However, I'd be interested to learn what level of HbA1c are you managing to maintain on your what is a quite high carbohydrate diet by any standards?

my hba1c which was done the other week was a very healthy 6%.

Great stuff!

I suppose that a Type 1 on a high carbohydrate diet such as yourself balances their blood glucose level by the amount of insulin that they inject. Am I understanding that correctly?

As far as I can see, a Type 2 such as myself on diet and metformin only doesn't have any such balancing method other than by changing their diet to avoid things that push up their blood glucose levels - i.e. managing sugar and carbohydrate intake. If people such as me were to push up our blood glucose levels higher, I suppose that would be where our GPs would eventually put us onto injecting insulin.

not at all wally. i use less insulin now than i did when i was first diagnosed. it is due to the fact i am into exercise in a big way.
