Hi!! I'm a newly diagnosed Type 1 Diabetic and just wondered, do I carb count the sweet and sour sauce? I assume I do because it's full of sugar, but the carb-counting booklet says not to count sauces. I assume that means tomato sauce, etc, not sweet & sour? Please can someone just confirm? Thanks a bunch x

Is there not any carb information on the jar or packet or is it home made? You could then make a judgement on how it compares to a tomato based sauce which it is telling you not to count.

@HeidiBee If there’s a reasonable amount of carbs in the sauce, yes, you’ll need to count them unless you’re only having a dollop or spoonful. Pre-prepared sauces are often high in carbs, eg some of the stir fry sauces, so I always check the carbs and count them in my meal count unless they’re minimal.

Probably too late now if you were asking for your evening meal but at least you’ll know for the future 🙂

I think Heidi means ketchup not a tomato-based sauce. The pre-prepared tomato pasta sauces and similar sometimes do need to be counted.

Would that mean they would be good as a stand by for low carb . I would use them with courgettes and vegetables not pasta if in a rush . Can you name them please?

Every sauce is different and so can be something of a minefield. I learned the hard way to measure sauces carefully and calculate carbs content based on the information on the jar.
Recently I tend to forgo bought sauces completely and make my own from scratch.

It depends how many carbs you’re having @Nayshiftin but I think perhaps you misread my post? I was saying that the carbs in ketchup can be ignored for insulin users but the carbs in pre-prepared pasta sauces, eg the tomato based ones, need counting because they have a not insignificant amount of carbs in. So, anyone on a very low carb diet would be better off avoiding them, I’d think.

Yes Inka, I got you wrong. See all bought sauces I find are not low carb and ketchup is just sugar to a type 2 so i avoid them. Hence could you name what was good . Thanks for claryfication. Type 1 is so different as it more you need carbs to survive hence the insulin . i as type two need so little carbs. You know lol

You might find the 'stir though' pasta sauces are pretty good on carbs 20g per jar which you might use to make a meal for 4 people then that is only 5g per portion.
 
That’s ok @Nayshiftin Easily done 🙂 If you want something tomatoey with your courgettes, the lowest carb thing is to put part of a tin of chopped tomatoes on them or two or three fresh tomatoes. That way you’re avoiding the sugar (lots of pre-prepared tomato sauces have sugar in) plus other unnecessary carbs.

Another option for flavour is a teaspoon or two of pesto in the small jars. You can get red/tomato ones and the carbs are minimal.

Because you only have a small quantity of ketchup, Type 1s can ignore the carbs.
