Carb Counting

My dafne handbook doesn't say this, page 39 says that says ''However, once you are feeling better, you may consider taking an additional 1 or 2 CPs of slower-acting carbohydrates eg fruit, bread or breakfast cereal. This will keep your blood glucose level up until the next meal''. I remember clearly the course instructor also mentioning that the treatment of hypo's should include a slower-acting carb when bg returns to normal levels, the only exception to this rule is when you are within 1 hour of your next meal.

This is the key thing really, the guide on the next page does say if it's more than 2 hours until next meal consider 1 1/2- 2 CP's. The latest posters also have ? additional CP's written on them. The general encoruagement is not to take extra long acting CP's if basal dose is correct. For so long it was a hard rule for people with diabetes to follow up hypos with more carbs so a hard habit to break.

Slightly confused with what you've wrote here, are you saying that dafne no longer advise taking extra CP's after fast-acting glucose? Well before dafne began I was always told to treat the hypo and follow up with 10g of slow acting carbs, the slow acting stops bg falling again but also stops it rising to high, it's worked for me all these years and I'd be reluctant to stop.

Page numbers:confused:

DAFNE is a set of principles and not a set of instuctions..

If you treat DAFNE as a set of instuctions then you'll not going to get very far with control.

DAFNE is a foundation to build from and expand, it gives you basic understanding of diabetes to which you learn to take managment to add your own tweak to gain the control/management..

Agreed, which is why I was saying there are some of the principles I have adapted to meet my needs. The hypo thing is just one of them

Couldn't have worded it better myself...........

This is going to sound a very dumb question so please accept my apologies..but is carb counting only for those who inject insulin?

In a sense, yes, because knowing the carb amount is critical when deciding how much insulin to use to cover those carbs, it can be wise however for non injecting diabetics to know what there eating, in the carb sense, the information is just used differently........
