Today I finally had my appointment with the dietician re carb counting. She has advised me to get a book called Carbs and Cals which she showed me and given me the other advise to help me on my way. Will do this myself for 2 months then see her and DSN to be given insulin to carb ratio. It's only really fine-tuning what I have been doing but am hoping it will help straighen BS out a bit - I had 30 hypos in June so DSN not happy about that. Was very interested to be told that peas had some carbs - never knew that!

Hi Newbs, I have that book, it's my 'bible' It goes everywhere with me, it's great in the fact that it shows you portion size too, weight etc... and I didn't know that peas had carbs either until I looked it up in here!
what have you been using since dx? I see you've been T1 since 2000? I have been on insulin since 2010, nov. and never had that many hypos!!!
🙂

Yes, I remember being told to count peas, and also sweetcorn. From all accounts the Carbs and Cals book is very good and is even available as an app if you are a technogeek (that's what I call people with phnes that can have pictures on them 😉) Hope the blood sugars improve as a result! 🙂

Peas and sweetcorn are a couple of the few vegetables that we count points on in Weight Watchers because of the carbs. 🙂

We also count parsnips, so watch out for them, too...

Since diagnosis I've basically just been guessing the carbs/insulin for each meal but this does come unstuck when eating out/having something I've never had before. It's good to know someone who has actually got the book and finds it helpful, I have ordered it now. 🙂
