Hi folks, I’m new to DUK and hope what I am asking for support for is ok. I am a carer for a T1 diabetic who recently was successful in winning an appeal with the DVLA. In regard of hyper awareness. I am looking to help secure insurance for a new car , my question is, can anyone advice, share any insurance company that understands the world of diabetes, are there any insurance companies who specialise with people with diabetes. Apologies if I have overreached but I do need help , thanks all in advance , regards EarlT

Most car insurance companies, at most, ask whether any driver has a medical condition which the DVLA need to be notified of.

You say, yes and tell them what it is, they note the system and that's the end of it. They're shouldn't be the need for any specialist insurer involvement assuming all drivers have a valid driving licence.

Some insurers don't even ask that much and just ask whether you have notified the DVLA of any relevant conditions and then don't ask anything further.

Bear in mind car insurance companies cannot discriminate against people with diabetes. I find that declaring it has not impacted my price and never needed to use a specialist insurance company.

Guess they wil be specialist brokers that deal in insurance for people with diabetes or other health conditions that could help, but tbh I'd look at whole market as insurance companies ain't allowed to discriminate by increasing premiums for us with diabetes.

Usually, in my own experience insurance companies don't ask why you have a restricted licence, all they ask is that you declare it. Own insurance is no dearer or less than someone my own age.

Im sure my car insurance just asked if I had any medical conditions that the DVLA had to be made aware of when I answered yes
they then asked was I now on a driving licence with any medical restrictions on it
I recall them asking what the medical condition was
Life insurance was something totally different and to get life insurance I had to go to a specialist to get anything like a competitive policy

There’s a small section concerning insurance on this page on the main website which covers driving with diabetes:

Diabetes and car insurance

Most car insurance companies won’t charge more if you have diabetes. You should complain if they do and if you’re still not happy then try somewhere else.
You’ll have to declare your diabetes as a material fact when applying for insurance. We’ve information about insurance and diabetes to help you.

There is a little more information about diabetes and insurance on this page too

This is now a good few years out of date in respect of disclosure and material facts.

CIDRA came in April 2013 and disclosure of material facts has gone from consumer insurance.

I’ll pass this on to the website content team @dannybgoode thanks!

Quite a few years ago you could go in an issuance broker broker and they would have look up tables for insurance groups and the group against age for different before any no claims or loading. That is long gone as they expanded from 9 groups to 50, used computerised quotes, and went into minute detail like trim level and exact p[postcode. Personally I think some do load diabetics and others behind this smokescreen but without concrete evidence I dare not quote a specific company I think guilty of this.

All I can advise is shop around and check everything. Also beware of car dealers offering you insurance as there is always something in it for them!

This is easy to check with online quotes - I can request a quote with a "normal" license and then repeat the exercise with a 3 year license.
I find this easier than using a broker who is zooming through screens on their computer.

I was reviewing my car insurance quote this morning from my current insurer and realised I probably needed to mention the diabetes diagnosis. However, when I used the chat function to speak with the agent, they simply said was it something that needed to be reported to DVLA and if yes, had I done so. As my diabetes condition is not one that needs reporting (no use of insulin) I was able to answer no to both questions.
