Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
A friend of mine just told me that Halle Berry is also diabetic, but am slightly confused as i went on the internet and it said that she was type one but changed to a type two. Is that possible, can you change types as i was under the impression that you couldn't? Can someone please explain?

Hi Tash,

I have heard this on many occassions since I got diabetes and I have seen the interview you are referring to. I can only say please dont be led by what halle says, I believe she has misunderstood the condition as she speaks of injecting like we are drug users as she weaned herself off injections. We know this not to be the case. It is not a case of "trying" to give them up, like an addiction.

It is such a shame as a person like Halle has the great advantage to educate people young and old, not use her high profile to misinform anyone who will listen.

I would ignore what you have seen and carry on tasha!

Agreed, Halle has given some very misleading interviews which is a real shame as she could potentially have been someone in the public eye (of course there are others) to really raise awareness of diabetes. I believe she is type 2 but wrongly stated she was type 1 because she was on insulin, as she is now diet controlled she has said that she 'weaned herself off' insulin and said that she's managed to go from t1 to t2 as if type 2 is some sort of 'mild form'! Just wrong on so many levels....

In fact, this is the interview, grrrrr http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amEM-geXY7o

Just watched it. High heaven, that woman is an idiot!😱 That makes me really really angry - she's supposed to be an intelligent woman, and she would, you are right, be in a position where she could be a great spokesperson for diabetes. Now that just makes it sound like type 1's who don't 'wean themselves off insulin' aren't trying hard enough😡

My understanding of it is if you are on insulin your pancreaas does not work full stop. If you are on pills your pancreas does still work a little bit at least, and you need the pills to help it along. Probably over simplified, but this is just my understanding of it.

I have not seen/heard the interview. The only thing I can surmise is Ms. Berry was mis diagnosed in the first place. All the people I know that started off on pills heve eventually needed at least one injection a day.

Tash, I assume that Halle Berry was misdiagnosed in the first place - something that was possibly influenced by the oft peddled belief that all Type 2's are middle-aged/old, extremely fat and physically inactive with appalling diets. (Sorry I'm just having a grumpy older woman moment). Her ethnicity would be an increased risk factor.

A specialist dietician in diabetes told me that it is possible for a Type 1 to develop the insulin resistance characteristic of a Type 2 and so be prescribed metformin. Equally as Type 2's can eventually stop producing insulin themselves they may then need insulin

I feel a bit sorry for her actually. She was obviously mis-diagnosed initially and has really not got a good understanding of her condition. I wonder what her doctors have been telling her, we all know there are some that talk a load of c**p and tell patients things that aren't true.

If you are type 1 then you can't change your type, only if you were wrongly diagnosed as a type 1 and then later find out you have another type that you could maybe stop insulin. Bit like the people who were diagnosed with type 2 and then found out later they really had type 1. they haven't changed type just been re-diagnosed with the correct type.

she is deluded and dont ever think tash that you can change from type 1. we have it and as much as it really does suck thats the end of it for now. dont give up hope tho as we have some fab scientist who work in the field of genetics who will eventually find a break though in this field. till the do all the right things as being healthy will make diabetes easier for you to handle :D

Heard about this interview before I was actually a diabetic. Even then I knew she was wrong and you can't stop being a type 1 and switch to type 2. It's such a pity that she's misled people and has perhaps a poor understanding of her condition, thanks perhaps to her doctors. :(

The thing is that interview is years old now and there is NO WAY she hasn't been corrected. In another thread there is a link to a news report that says she is type one and injects insulin. Why the hell doesn't she talk about how wrong she was before and set the record straight?

Maybe she's too embarrassed haha.

Agree she should have released some kind of statement clarifying what type of diabetes she has, saying she is sorry if she mis-lead people etc.

Yes, I think you're probably right there.

That's me!

Halle Berry is an idiot , I wonder how many people have been mis-led by the things she

has been saying , and maybe even risked their health trying to copy her and wean

themselves off Insulin ?? she needs to stand up and admit she was wrong and that she is

a type 2 and not an Insulin free type 1...
