Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Firstly, hello

This is my first post and I truly hope somebody could just give me some advice. I suffer terrible anxiety so wanted to know how to find out what I need to do.
I'm a type 1 diabetic and due to not needing a car I let my driving licence run out 7 years ago. I am now wondering what position I am in as regards to being able to drive again.
Will I need to start from scratch and retake my driving/theory tests ?

Many thanks for any help.

Matthew

Welcome to the forum, Matthew. What exactly happened? Did you let your licence run out before or after you passed test and changed from provisional to full? I think you may need to ask Diabetes UK careline for advice. Plus, you may need to declare your anxiety to be considered in combination with your type 1 diabetes. The key factor is whether ir not you gave hypo awareness and whether or not you have ever had to be assisted to treat a hypo, plus any complications, such as neuropathy.

Hello and thanks for your quick reply.
I passed my test and drove for 2 and a half years. Have very good diabetes control and have not had any real Hypos despite being a runner. Certainly nothing that has ever required assistance, my warning signs are pretty good. Have full evidence as am on a pump and so have pump clinics.
I am in good health including my eyes.
My anxiety is just more towards phones, I get nervous in shops and cafes when alone but could easily give a presentation, no one would ever believe I was anything other than confident but some simple tasks test me, yet difficult ones I excell at, very strange.
Thank you again for your fast reply

Matthew

Thanks for details. As phoning is a problem, you might prefer to email Diabetes UK Careline, rather than phone. Depending on their advice, you will probably need to contact DVLA regarding driving licence. If you don't want to phone DVLA, you can write (keep copy of letter and consider Recorded Delivery) or email. You will probably need to provide contact details for your medical teams. If you mention anxiety, you'll need to explain how it is treated and by whom.
There are several keen runners on this site eg Northerner does half marathons, while I do parkruns and participate in, and coach, orienteering, not particularly fast.

Thank you so much for your help. Am incredibly appreciative and shall take your advice. Many thanks.

Matthew

Do let us know how you get on, Matthew.

Hi Matthew, really good luck in sorting this out. Your Dr will be able to tell them what they want to know. Sometimes its a right carry on but I bet you can do it !
