Hi

New to the forum I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes on Monday I had a hbac1 reading gof 61. (68 on the first test January 13th) I'm going round to a friends tonight for dinner I've sorted out a nice low carbon meal of chicken shish with some salad but I wondered amni alright to have a beer with a mate.

It's been a month since I drank, am I allowed an occasional treat or should I co ti ue to abstain. Can't say a life of abstinence appeals but also don't want to cause all kinds of problems for myself any advice would be welcome

Beginning to think I should of called myself panicky Rob to be fair

Sounds like you have made a good choice for your food so I think it is reasonable to have a pint once in a while as a treat. The difficulty can come when 1 leads to 2 pints leads to more or having something else to eat and willpower goes out of the window as the alcohol hits your system. If you can be self disciplined and stick to just one and not have crisps or whatever afterwards (pork scratching are OK though as no carbs in them), then go for it.
Personally I am an all or nothing girl so I know that if I was to have 1 or 2 squares of Cadbury's Dairy Milk I would end up eating the whole bar, even if it was a large 200g bar and it will probably take me days to get back on track again, so for me it is simply not worth going down that route. You will likely know if you can be sensible or go off the rails.

Some beers are worse than others. Here's a list of US beers with carb content per 12 fluid oz (a standard beer bottle):

Zero carb beers do exist - if you Google 'zero carb beer UK' you'll find a couple of examples. As to whether they're available near you is another question.

If you like wine or spirits - very dry white wine like Prosecco is good carb-wise, as are all spirits as far as I know. Using sparkling water or sugar-free soft drinks as a mixer if desired, spirits are a readily available zero-carb option when out.

Generally speaking, you are allowed an occasional treat. It's when treats become regular habits that problems may arise.

Have a good night 🙂

Thank you as it goes my mate just cancelled but I think I might have a whisky and some sparking water. Been a roller coaster of s month and I've lost 1stone 5lbs which was very careless
