Had a colonoscopy which also included a biopsy - the consultant who did it said there was nothing to be concerned about. However, being the person I am I'm now starting to worry :(

1. If they found anything serious they would let me know as soon as possible wouldn't they and not make me wait 10-14 days...

2. If he had seen anything serious they would have acted on it there and then and not just send me home....

I'm getting scared now...

No polps we're removed and he didn't mention any ulcers or anything..

I have no experience of this but I would imagine that it is simply routine and I would also expect them to let you know straightaway if there was any cause for concern. Although it's impossible not to, until you know the results, do try not to worry Amanda. It won't achieve anything or help you in any way, so try to distract yourself with something else and the time will fly by.

That's what I need to hear; I just wish I'd asked more questions - the nurse who discharged me said there was nothing nasty; just need to ensure they haven't missed anything, Thank you, big hug xxx🙂

Hi Amanda. Hubby had the same thing a few months ago- during the colonoscopy a polyp was removed, it was a couple of weeks before we got a letter saying it was benign; i suspect if it was worrying they'd have expedited things. The doc did say some people are just 'polyp growth factories' & it's not necessarily a problem, they'll just need regular checks. The main thing is you've done the right thing in getting checked, so the docs will be able to sort out what's going on promptly & give you peace of mind. Like Northerner said, try not to worry, try & focus on something positive whilst you wait. Bigs hugs to you too! (((()))) 🙂

Thank you for the kind and reassuring words - I didn't have a polyp removed; they said there was a feint discolouration on the bowel wall due to excessive use of laxative (had IBS since 15 and have had episodes of constipation ever since) - I think this is why they took the biopsy. As I had gas and air I wasn't fully taking in what was said except consultant saying "there is nothing there to be concerned about"..but I've done the stupid thing and googled and SCARED MYSELF SILLY...Why Why Why do I do this to myself??

Amanda - they will let you know if there is a problem - try not to worry, easier said than done I know.

If you start getting really worried call the consultants secretary and say that because of the gas and air you didn't take in everything - and ask if the consultant will speak to you. The answer may be no but it could be a yes and you could get the answers to some of your questions.

If the consultant had seen anything to be concerned about they would have said to you there and then. It is routine to send a biopsy off, I have had this procedure a couple of times and it is always done, I also have polyps removed and sent off too. It was also a couple of weeks before I heard the result of the biopsy but I'm sure they would've contacted sooner if treatment was needed.

I try not to google anything now (hard as it is to resist) as you always end up reading the worst case scenarios.

...'cos you're human? 😉 My doc sent me for a test to 'rule out' Addison's disease a few months ago...very quickly i'd convinced myself that i had this condition & would drop off my perch due to an adrenal crisis within weeks lol 😱 ...of course, the test results were normal! 😱 I think it's normal to worry!

Hope you're feeling reassured. Xx

Hee hee, you sound like me. Be Prepared For the Worst Case Scenario, LOL. Trouble is the Worst Cases may be so gruesome you actually wish you hadn't prepared yourself for them; ignorance truly can be bliss sometimes!

The only 2 things I remember about my actual colonoscopy were a) the chap 'shoved' at some stage which caused me to emit on Ohhhh involunarily and I was far too dpey to be able to apply my stiff upper lip and prevent it happening, he just kept shoving and I kept doing it! Didn't care - Valium. And he SHOUTED at me - well he said in a very strict voice, There's absolutely NO need to do that - whatsoever. Well stop shoving then, you idiot - because it's you making me do it, lying here on this 2ft wide trolley with the cot side up, all squashed up with my knees up to my chest!

and b) Then when he removed the tackle I let out THE most tremendous and noisy fart and I remember thinking THAT just serves the miserable git right! - hope it stank! and I immediately went to sleep. I woke up about an hour later and apparently had been snoring like a pig throughout. Tough on them ... LOL

For anyone needing a colonoscopy in the future - ask about the virtual option via CT - its faster and will show other organs in the lower abdomen too. Not sure how widely available it is.

The downside is if they see anything suspect they then need to do a traditional one.

Normally if there is anything to worry about, they let you know. The results will be with you before you have had time to worry too much, so try and relax and njoy the sunshine.
