Hello all,
Im a newbie and really glad I found this site you all seem to help each other which is marvelous. Well I need to ask advice from anyone as Im in such a dilemma I just dont know what to do.
Apparantly Ive not been well as of late and the symptoms all came to diabetes I had a random finger prick at tesco and that was 9.0 so they advised me to see my G.P. Urgently and gave me a letter. I saw the practice nurse explained why I was there as she hadnt a clue or about Diabetes I thought great so I had a blood test in my arm and the reading came back 10.3. so I was told to fast have a glucose test ive got my readings back and its 6.3. all normal no need to be seen To be honest my G.P. thought I was Diabetic but at the moment he is away so I really dont know what to do Im having Hypos and im up and down I just havent a clue what to do ive asked for a retest would that be the best thing can anyone advise Id be grateful

Thankyou all Tahitian x

Hi Tahitian, welcome to the forum! Random tests (like the Tescos one) would normally only be cause for alarm if above 11, and a fasting test would need to be above 7 for a diagnosis of diabetes to be made. So, although your levels appear to be on the high side, they are not yet high enough for diabetes to be confirmed. Do you have other symptoms - thirst, excessive visits to the loo etc? Is there another GP you can see? Normally you'd have more than one test, and a glucose tolerance test.

Thankyou Northener

🙂 Hello yes I do have all the symptoms you mentioned and as it was at our surgery its the practice nurse who does the blood test she wasnt a D.N and when I asked her questions she had no idea and treated me like as if I wasnt there.I did have the arm test done and that came back 10.3 but the glucose tolerence test came back at 6.3 but my G.P. will be very interested when he comes off annual leave as he was sure I had the symptoms so what ive done is asked for the test again the fasting and when my G.P. comes back Ill have a word but to be honest im rather scared as ive got pain in my legs im tired all the time until i have something sugary im not a big eater but im a large lady way over target and like the practice nurse said i could do with joining weight watchers that should help to be honest she wasnt at all interested I have got Angina High cholestrol and High blood pressure and I have Epilepsy so you can see I have quite alot of ailments but Im sorry to moan on Im petrified due to the fact I know I am but for some reason the fasting came back at 6.3

Thankyou Tahitian x

Tahitian - welcome. Hope you can see your GP soon, as they'll know more about your health (sounds like you have multiple problems) than any of us on this forum. Many people do find the support of regular slimming meetings helpful in losing weight. It's also worth asking your GP about any local exercise referral schemes eg swimming, walks, gym etc.

You mention get "Im having Hypos and im up and down" - blood sugar levels do vary - anything from 4.0 to about 8.0mmol/l is considered normal in people without diabetes. It's very unusual for anyone not taking insulin or some diabetes tablets to be hypoglycaemic (under 4.0mmol/l) - only really happens to extreme / endurance athletes.

Hi,
I'm new to this site but as a job I work as a hospital pharmacist and I wonder if any of your problems could be linked to medication. Sometimes muscle pain can be caused by cholesterol lowering medicines and fatigue can be caused by beta blockers used to treat angina and high blood pressure. I don't know if you are taking any of these but if you are it would be worth talking to your doctor about it.Even changing to a different medicine in the same group can ease the problem. Don't stop taking any medicines before talking to your doctor though as some need to be reduced gradually before changing them. If you can't get to see your dr talk to your pharmacist.
