I bought a large sweetheart cabbage a couple of weeks ago and although savoy is my favourite, I have really enjoyed this cabbage and it has done me numerous meals and I am not by any means sick of it yet and still some left.
So easy to just finely slice some off it and put the rest back in the fridge. Put the sliced cabbage in a microwaveable container with a knob of butter and cover and zap for 3 mins on high and it is done. I have had it with bacon and mushrooms, (love cabbage and bacon). I toss it in the pan with the bacon fat when the bacon is cooked. It was lovely with black pudding and fried egg and I have made the equivalent of cabbage bhaji (curried cabbage) several nights where I have fried off in onion and garlic with cumin, turmeric and garam marsala in the frying pan, then tipped the mircrowaved cabbage (with butter) into the pan and added tomato puree and a quartered small tomato and some cucumber tonight but a couple of days ago I added chopped mushrooms and a bit of cooked beef mince, added a bit of cayenne pepper and gave it a bit more bubble in the pan whilst stirring and served. I enjoyed it so much, I have leftover curried cabbage for breakfast.

Still got about a third of it left and looking forward to trying new ways to cook/serve it.
Anyone got any good simple cabbage recipes?

Sweetheart cabbage is my favourite. They’re usually reasonably priced too. I don’t have a recipe but I cut it into shreds and fry it in some butter with thinly sliced onions and a few crushed juniper berries (I occasionally add a dash of gin too!). It goes nicely with sausages and nut roasts (or pork if you eat it).

I also put it in a stir fry sometimes.

Where do you get juniper berries from?

Tesco or most supermarkets. They’re in with the spices and herbs. If you just crush them a little it helps release the flavour. Less is more because they have quite a strong flavour so try a few and see if they’re to your taste.

Must get some, thanks for reply & advice.

i love the Hairy Bikers salmon with shredded greens. its like using cabbage as the pasts. its not carb free but i love it as a treat. There is honey in the sauce.

Our favourite way with sweetheart cabbage is to roast it in foil in the oven with garlic sprinkled on it - delicious!
