Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi I've been diagnosed type 1 for 2 weeks and I have to go away tomorrow for a study day for my work. I m staying overnight in a hotel and then there is a buffet at lunchtime. I've done quite well so far counting carbs but a buffet is scary. Any advice please?

Tell the hotel when you check in and they will make sure there are buffet items which are diabetic "friendly".such as chicken wings and legs, kebab skewers etc rather than chicken nuggets and sausage rolls.
Also worth mentioning it to your HR people as it is their responsibility that your health requirements are covered

Buffets can be a bit of a nightmare! There are often lots of little carby things - pastries, sandwich fragments, potato and pasta salads, breaded and wrapped unidentifiable mouthfuls (some buffets contain nothing but yards and yards of beige food!). Keeping a running total can be a real challenge!

Hopefully as @JMyrtle suggests, you might have access to cold meats, cheeses, salad and can pick and choose your carbs as you like.

I tend to always assume I am eating approx 30% more carbs than I am estimating as I have a tendency to underguess buffets - but you might be fine.

Enjoy your time away and hope the food is nice 🙂

I'm greedy if there is a wide choice of food. I love food. Had a team building away day yesterday with work. Was a cold buffet, the choice was limited. Lots of carby things like pizza and pastries. Salad was limited. You will just have to play this one a bit by ear, as you cant read the packets or gauge the portion sizes very well.
