Hi Helen, sorry you have the lurgy as well 🙂
Lemsip is fine as far as I know but throat sweets even the so called sugar free ones are carb laden.
Having a bug would also affect your blood sugars.

There's quite a bit of sugar in Lemsip as I understand... unless they do a sugar free version. So yes, I imagine it would affect your numbers. But if you're feeling that bad, I wouldn't worry about it too much, your numbers are likely elevated because of the infection anyway and if the stuff works for you, I'd go for it.

Sorry to hear you're feeling rough, HelenHanfe.

If you're worried about the sugar, then just take the drugs as tablets and use lemon and ginger tea bags to make a hot drink.

But, an infection will raise your blood glucose levels anyway, as others have explained.

Remember that there is considerable truth in the saying that a treated cold will last 7 days and untreated cold will last a week.

Hi Ally, I've just done a google search (good ol google 🙂 ) and found the nutritional info for lemsip.
No carbs so safe to use.

Without knowing what medicines you are on, neither I nor anyone here can advise you on which over the counter medicines to take. As a diabetic you are advised to consult your health care professional before taking Lemsip (see: http://www.nhs.uk/medicine-guides/pages/MedicineOverview.aspx?medicine=Lemsip Max All-In-One)
and this is not because of any effects on your BG.

Boots WebMD cites the use of Paracetemol (main ingredient in Lemsip) or Ibuprofen with Ibuprofen winning if you have a chesty cough.
My wife swears that Echinacea will reduce the effect of a head cold, I've tried it twice and it seems to work (but that is not proof).
I find a dab of Menthol Ointment (like Vicks) on the top lip helps to clear the breathing a night.

I'm a great fan of Echinacea too. On the day we were going on holiday in January I had a nasty sore throat of the type that usually precedes a cold. I bought some Echinacea at the airport and the cold never developed. Hubby had the start of a cold this week and took some and he was fine within 24 hours.

Thanks for all the advice / input - much appreciated !
