Hi,
Im a type 2 diabetic and up untill 10 days ago i was only diet controlled, then my GP started me on Metformin as i was feeling so unwell. Then today my GP increased my metformin to twice a day. My worry is that i dont eat breakfast, i havent dont since i was about 10! The reason being i just cant eat anything in the morning and the other is probably laziness, i'd much rather have a cold drink and at fag at 6.30am before work - i know your probably gasping in shock thinking i dont deserve advice, but i am looking for some simple ideas for breakfast that a can grab on the go. I dont really fancy toast, porradge or cereal. Are cereal bars ok? not sure what effect the metformin will have if i dont eat breakfast.
Hope you can give me some ideas.
Paul
PS - i will pack in the fags once i get my diet sorted, i know i need to look after myself!😉

Hi Paul and welcome to the forum - your post may get a little lost here - you may want to post in the newbies section.

Are you taking the metformin at breakfast time ? I ask because I think its recommended that you eat at the same time as that lessens the side-effects of the metformin. i could be wrong though.

Some people have bacon and eggs for breakfast or yoghurt with berries.

Are you testing your blood sugars to see what effect food has on you?

Hiya

Well the thing you should know is - unless you eat aomething when you get up - your BG is likely to start rising and carry on rising and rising ...... possibly all the way to lunchtime ..... so you need to eat something.

But you don't have to eat anything you don't want to, nor does it actually have to be ten tons of stodge. The old full English without the fried bread is ideal but that's hardly an 'on the go' brekkie. Neither is a strawberry omelette. But why think 'breakfast foods' anyway?

Bit of cheese on a Ryvita
Yoghurt
Hard-boiled egg
Cold meat

Hi Margie.
I am going to be taking metformin in the morning and at tea time. Also Gp said to test my blood sugar before breakfast and before tea

Welcome to the forum Paul 🙂

I'm in the "yoghurt for breakfast" group 😉 Although, depending what type of cold drink you have in the morning, it might actually contain some carbs to stop your blood glucose rising.

Milk, juice and some squashes do have a bit of carb in them.

The biggest problem I found with taking metformin on an empty stomach was the need to rush somewhere a bit later...
