Here are a breakdown of my recent cholesterol results:-

HDL 1.5
LDL 2.8
Trigs 2.90
cholesterol 5.6
total cholesterol: HDL ratio 3.7

I would appreciate your thoughts on these results please thanks 🙂

According to the targets on the DUK site (http://www.diabetes.org.uk/Guide-to-diabetes/Monitoring/Blood_fats_lipids/) your HDL is good, LDL could be lower (below 2.0), Trigs lower (below 1.7) and total chol lower (below 4.0). So still some work to do it seems. I have found that exercise, particularly aerobic (running, cycling, swimming etc.) really helps with the areas you need to improve on - when I don't do it for a while, they go up, and when I do, they go down! 🙂

Thanks Northerner, my GP asked me yesterday if i had missed taking any tablets (I have not) and she also suggested i review my diet to try and cut down on saturated fats and watch cheese intake and also to use the spreads like flora pro-activ or benecol so i suppose i can improve on this as you say. I will of course be continuing with my gym and weight loss so fingers crossed when i go back for my review in Feb things will have improved 🙂 (it really involves a lot of dedication and hard work to be 'healthy' lol!)

It certainly does! I'm sure you can do it Carina, just keep up your motivation! 🙂 Don't forget that oily fish can help too - I just had my sardines on toast!

Hi Carina.

I remember you mentioned eating a snickers bar as a snack a while ago.

It could be simple things like the odd treat that is keeping your levels elevated. I've just had a slice of cheesecake (low fat) so I'm in no position to preach about saturated fats but I know you're working hard to get things right and I thought I should mention it in case it's relevant.🙂

You'll get there.

Rob

Good luck with the challenge! I'm trying to reduce cholesterol levels too and there are a few other foods that apparently have a beneficial effect:
Oats (get on the porridge for breakfast!), brown rice, almonds, walnuts and honey (as well as the oily fish that Northerner already mentioned).
I was in denial about the need for exercise for some time, but recently joined a gym and am enjoying it quite a bit 🙂 All the best

Ooh yes, I'd forgotten how good oats are supposed to be - good tip! Good to hear you have joined the gym, a lot of people find they enjoy it much more than they expected - keep up the good work! 🙂
