Hi guys, quick question I'm hearing different things regarding wether you should take Novo rapid even if you are just say having a tuna salad for lunch. What are your thoughts. Thank you.

Probably there's no need. But it depends exactly what's in the salad (and how big it is, what your insulin sensitivity is, etc.). And if you need a correction dose then you still want to take that.

It very much depends what your salad consists of... Some prepackaged tuna salads contain pasta or potato salad or beans and I would need to bolus for those items. If there are more than 2 cherry tomatoes I would probably bolus for those (or only eat 2) and then I might need a correction unit later for the protein in the tuna if there were no other carbs with the meal. Is the Tuna in salad cream or mayonnaise. Salad cream is made with sugar whereas mayonnaise isn't, so that would be something I would take into consideration, depending upon how much had been used. There really are lots of factors to consider, so it is not a simple yes/no answer. You have to assess the carb content and figure out if YOU personally need insulin with it and it can be quite an individual thing.

Thanks guys, it's homemade and no mayonaise. I may take 2 units and see how I get on. Last time I took my usual 8 and 1hour 30later I had a hypo.(no suprise) .

note down the carbs from everything you've added and total it so you know how many were in it and whether the dose you give works or not too, even after 4 years I still weigh everything I need to inject for xx

Ok thank you.

I personally wouldn't need ANY fast acting for a salad which only consists of protein (fish, meat, cheese) and salad veg and either oil & vinegar or mayo (Hellman's full fat) - but of course if I start adding a bit of cooked pasta, rice or potato, and have either bread & butter or a couple of buttered Ryvita with it - THEN I do need it.

We are all different so often the correct bolus dose is only worked out after trial and error.
If you are comfortable to do so, trial a tuna salad without insulin. If you go a little high, it is not terrible and you have learnt not to do it next time.

Sugar is the fourth ingredient on the list of ingredients for Hellman's mayonnaise. Not as much as in Salad Cream, but it is there.

I make my own mayonnaise if I need it, it takes around thirty seconds with a stick blender. I don't put any sugar in it.

4.4 after 2 hours with 3 hours till dinner , least I know next time I don't need any. On the plus side got to have a biscuit .

The protein from the tuna might release between now and dinner and bring you up bit or soak up the remaining active insulin from your bolus, so it is still a bit early to say for sure if your bolus was right or not. What was your premeal reading?

Being newly diagnosed & still producing some insulin doubtful if you'd need insulin, someone like myself has to bolus for salads , but I have many years behind me living with condition.

Also, with basal dose still being worked out and no ratios in place, it’s hard to accurately say what’s needed. Quite apart from the honeymoon period as @nonethewiser refers to.

4.9 -4.4 2 hours later.

Well I doubt if I ever have more than a teaspoon of it whoever made it and however it happened to be made - I do know though that normal salad cream tastes very sweet indeed and doesn't go at all well with salad any more !

It’s lovely on mashed potato though *drool* I’ve found a number of the salad creams and such vary with sweetness between different brands. Same with sauces like mint sauce and tartare sauce.

Grief - we didn't get anywhere near enough salad cream to put it anywhere else than on the salad itself. Salad = I lettuce leaf, 2 slices of tomato & 2 of cucumber and c. 1 dessert spoonful of grated carrot, one tablespoon of mash and one slice of meat.

I’m feeling spoilt now. We had salted peanuts with our salad, and more than the one leaf of lettuce :D

All our sauces came in large spoonfuls from a bucket....sorry, bowl.....held by the dinner lady and ceremoniously dolloped out as you passed her. This is probably why I love most sauces and gravies - and custard of whatever colour :D
