Afternoon all, just wondering if you guys had any advice on how to bolus for pasta. I'm a newbie with this type of food. I'm having around 128g of carbs in total. Thank you.

For me it depends what I have with it.
Many pasta sauces are high in fat which delays the absorption from the carbs.
So, if I am having a cheesy or creamy sauce with my pasta, I would split my bolus - half before and half about an hour later.
But if I was having a less fatty sauce such as a tomato-based sauce, I would take it all up front.

As with everything else, we are all different and require some trial and error.

I’d probably split the bolus, mainly because 128g of carbs is 13u and I don’t like to do that all in one injection as I find it slower to absorb. The timing of when you split it takes some experimentation. If there wasn’t much fat (say pasta and tomato/veg not fat or cream based sauce) then I’d probably prebolus for half 15-20 mins before eating, and then take a bit more depending on whether I ate more than half of it or not, after finishing. If it was a higher fat meal i wouldn’t prebolus as much in advance and might take the second half a bit later on. You have to work out what works for you with experimentation really though

I'd personally bolus for that as I would any other meal.
I'm unsure as read it takes a while for

Ok brilliant

I took 5 units 10 mins before and the rest 30 mins later and I don't think there was much fat in it at all as I'm rising quite quickly now. Least I know for next time thank you everyone for the replys your all very helpful .

Adding a little cheese to pasta can be worth trying if you enjoy cheese, partly as it tastes good, and partly as it can help to slow down the spike a bit.

Pasta is a weird one for me, and has been quite temperamental at various points.

Usually I find for me it acts far more quickly than its reputation, and for 60-70g’s worth of carbs i need to take it all up front.

Then a couple of years ago spaghetti began to behave extremely strangely. I started hypoing after meals, because of suddenly very slow absorption. I ended upwith only a small fraction up front, and the rest stretched over hours. But only with spaghetti!

It made no sense…

But it worked.

And then it switched back! And now I’m back to all up front again.

Weird.

And without CGM i would have been completely lost!

So I guess for me pasta is either just ‘simple, teeat it just like any other carbs’ or ‘expect the unexpected’.

But generally I do find any meal much larger in grams of carb than my weight in kilos tends to need a more generous insulin ratio, and often splitting over a longer time period.

Hope you find a system that works for you! But it may take a little persistence.

I don’t know how Italian T1s cope! Did your experiment work @Type1Pat ?
