Since diagnosis in September I have lost around 16 kilos. I have adapted to a healthier way of eating, which I feel I can maintain long term. My BMI is now 24.4, I am 5ft 7ins and have a 32 inch waist. Those figures seem to fall within 'normal'.
I am still losing around half a kilo a week. This may sound a silly question, the nurse certainly thought it was when I asked her in January, but will there come a time when I will stop losing the weight? I have seen too many non diabetic friends go on 'fad diets' and actually losing so much weight they look ill, and I don't want that to happen.

I seemed to stop losing weight as soon as I hit 'normal' BMI. In fact, mine is about the same as yours @kentish maid. I didn't change my diet, just think my body reached it natural weight.

My GP said similar, that at a certain point the weight would stabilise as long as I was eating sensibly. That seems to have played out as true as I do seem to have stabilised now and my worry I might have to start making extra (smaller) holes in my belt seems unfounded.

I bought a belt in Bulgaria a couple of years back but I was still losing weight at that time, so had to explain to the shop keeper that I wanted 2 extra holes. He didn't speak a word of English, but we explained the situation through sign language & he understood.🙂 I am now on the last hole.🙂

Thank you for the link @bamba. That makes a lot of sense.
Back in 70's when I lost weight using the Hip and Thigh Diet I remember that when I reached my goal weight I then went on what they classified as a maintenance diet. This time round I wanted to lose weight but also to adapt to a way of eating that I could maintain long term as although I may be able to put my diabetes into remission I am conscious of the fact that it will be lurking and if I revert to my old ways it will probably come back

I'm a naturally skinny person but I did start to gain a bit of weight each decade (about 1stone/10 years). Then, in 2016, I stopped drinking alcohol competely. I lost around 24 pounds over the course of the year then stabilised. My BMI dropped to around 21.0, but well within healthy range for these things. As long as you eat a healthy balanced diet I think the weight loss will slow eventually and then stabilise at a point that is 'natural' for you 🙂

Me too, I'm also down from 18 to 14.
No idea what I used to weigh but I am now down to 11 stone 10 (height 5ft 6.) and am now into jeans I haven't been able to even get over my hips for ten years.
I suppose there is an upside to all of this!

I seemed to stabilize out at 165lb, then I relaxed my diet a bit since Christmas & stabilized out at 175lb, now it's back down under 170lb & falling since I got my diet back on track last week suspect I'll see near 160lb by June (when I get my next A1c)

I bought several pairs of size 16 trousers just before Christmas, never imagine they would be falling off me by April, working out quite expensive

I seem to have stuck with the same trousers, belt, shirts etc for years and years. At the clinic, my weight seems to hover around the same figure every time. My diet is rubbish and I do enjoy "junk" food from time to time.

I've always drunk low sugar drinks, and being GF means that I don't eat bread or cakes or stull like that. But I like crisps.

I eat what I want really but don't go mad - it's generally balanced including lovely carbs with some rubbish included and I have sensible portions and keep fairly active. BMI and weight hasn't really varied that much all my adult life. What's this middle aged spread people talk about? :D I only find out what my weight is when I go to the clinic. Current weight 67kg and at 6' 1 gives me a BMI of 19.3 (at the bottom end of normal).

As usual, I'll be the fish swimming against the tide. As I tweaked my diet, I had to work on stopping the weight loss before I completely faded away.

I didn't have a lot to lose, but I'm not a skinny thing, monitoring my BMI (which is of course a flawed, blunt tool, but nevertheless.....) over 18.5. I wear a size 6, but I'm only a size 3 shoe, so I'm generally just a little person.

If I ate my BMR, I'd fade away. According to my body composition scales and the calculator in the link, my BMR is just under 1100 calories. I need to consume 2000-2500 calories a day to maintain a steady state. Of course 2000-2500 is a wide range, but the more fat I eat, the more calories I need. If I up my carbs, and sustain it, I need less; bizarrely.

Yes, I'll always be the one swimming against the flow, but I'm used to it now. 🙂

Well done on your trimming up @kentish maid , and good luck finding that sweet maintenance spot.

Hi. Yes, the weight should stabilise but note that in the unlikely event you are T1 and not T2 then the weight loss would be caused by ketosis i.e. fat burning due to lack of insulin but it sounds like you new diet is the reason.

Over 12 months ago my weight plateaued ~ I neither gained nor lost weight after that until around October 2017 when I began to gain weight due to being ill and not being able to exercise ~ thus did a lot of naughty comfort eating😱 I gained weight. Since then I have eaten in moderation and have started to lose weight again..... at last🙂 I still need to lose a further stone to get my weight to what it was in 2016 then I shall be happy to stay at that weight.....if I can!
