I feel so bad I need to ask this story 1st 12 weeks ago my HB was 83 I had to wait for 12 weeks for the next one I worked so hard to keep it low every day my blood went never higher than 9 so had bloods taken and the next day was my grandson 2nd birthday so we had a tea party at lunchtime and fish and chips all round it was my treat then next day phoned up for results there was a problem they got to take them again this morning I am so worried as yesterday my bloods read 13 and this morning 9.3 its going to show in result now and not be as low as last reading would have been one big blow out and now I am worried and regret it how right am I to be worried will it show up

Welcome to the forum @mandie !
The HbA1c test measures blood sugar levels over the previous 12 weeks so picks up the trend over that time. If you have generally been bringing your levels down then a single blow-out indiscretion shouldn't have too bad an impact.
We have to live our lives as well as managing diabetes
Hope your results show a positive trend.

Hi @mandie One big meal won’t skew your HbA1C result. It gives an idea of your blood sugar over the last three months.

Although, having re-read your post, you say you had the fish and chips the day after your blood test?

Whatever it is, don’t beat yourself up about it. Move on and keep up your good work.

First the bad news, you are a very naughty girl for indulging in a blow out. I would send you to the naughty step but its already full of T2's who have done exactly the same and whats more there is a queue half way round the block. All of us have been there and have learned from it.

Now the good news, as the others have said, one indulgence is not going to affect your HbA1c. You have also found exactly what fish and chips does to your blood glucose and that is a good thing, its where your meter comes into its own. Does not mean you have got to avoid fish and chips. Next time, try a lightly battered fish and a small portion of high quality chips and see what that does!

There was a problem, mandie says, and the test has got to be redone.(it's happened to me before, I expect they dropped the sample at the lab.)
As others have said, @mandie , one day won’t make a difference over a three month average.

The other thing is to know your fish and chip shop. The other day my wife and I ordered two fish and a small chips (to share between us). The 'small' chips was enough to feed a large family of 12!

Anyhoo, I can also confirm that one day's late indiscretion won't have too large an impact on your HbA1c. Also, the HbA1c isn't the thing you need to concentrate on. Yes, it is important, but much more important is how you control your diabetes on a day to day basis. Eventually, hopefully, that will then feed into a better HbA1c.

I say that because I am certainly guilty (and I think many are) of being 'better than normal' when an HbA1c test is coming up. I try not to be now, but I think it is the competitive spirit in me.

I hope your new HbA1c is a good 'un.

Andy 🙂

@mandie I think you should stop feeling bad

1. You had a great celebration for your grandson
2. You learnt a lesson about what fish and chips does to your blood sugars which you wouldn't have known if you hadn't tried and hadn't tested
3. The impact on your Hb1AC will be small

Don't beat yourself up.

That reminded me of when I worked in the path lab and we received samples from the G Ps and they had leaked everywhere or the vial was broken so not necessarily the labs fault.

It made me wonder though as when I had my HbA1C done last June they said my white cell count was a bit high and wanted a repeat of that but not the HbA1c which was 50mmol/l. Could that have influenced the result? non the less it prompted me into action which has been beneficial so a good thing.
