Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi all. Beware- newbie on the page- apologies for daft questions- i have loads! I'm type 2 & have been on metformin for 6 years. I ended up starting on insulin yesterday & haven't been able to warm up since- is this just coincidence? I dont normally feel the cold but last night had 2 jumpers, shawl & snuggie on.
Am stressing a bit about the insulin as I thought it'd be short term but was then told its permanent now.
Ttfn Nicola x

Hi Nicola, I was going to come onto the site to ask the same question ?! I am also similar to yourself that I am on metformin, but reduced to only two after tea, and on insulin (since last year).

All I can find out is that the cold does effect the elderly and those with long term illnesses.

I would like to see what the more experienced have to say about this subject?

I have no experience with diabetes but I am doing research in this area, my girlfriend has type 1 diabetes and she is very sensitive to cold weather (not sure whether it's related to her diabetes or her genetics). Insulin is said to increase the body temperature initially, so do you feel cold straight away or later on (maybe when the insulin has been metabolised)?

As far as I know insulin doesn't make you feel cold. However thyroid disease goes hand in hand with diabetes and an underactive thyroid will make you feel the cold. Best to ask the doctor to check it.

No help but I feel the cold & often wondered if it was a diabetes thing

Insulin doesn't make you feel cold. Circulation problems can cause people to feel cold. Infact there's prob 100's of reasons to feel cold, but it's not due to taking insulin. 🙂

I do have under active thyroid but don't usually feel the cold. It must have been a coincidence then. I only started my insulin yesterday & I've felt cold since. Maybe I'm just coming down with something. I think I'm just worrying about everything- I'll calm down soon :D xx

I'm not saying this is the answer, but just perhaps the combination of bringing BGs down and your thyroid issues have culminated in you feeling cold? One can very easily impact on the other!

I just wanted to comment on this topic of feeling the cold....

I used to be a person that was never cold, even on the coldest of days, I would still be happy in a t-shirt.
However, this last year, I have noticed I am feeling the cold a lot more. To the point that I easily catch "a chill" and feel rather poorly with it. Takes me a good few hours of sitting under blankets on top of the radiator to feel better. I have been on insulin for roughly 10 months now, and often wonder if it's related, or if indeed, I am just getting old!!!

Carol is never cold!!!😱

I'm always telling her to wear more clothes, it's cold out, but no- she goes out in a thin top and a leather jacket 🙄
PC says it's 4 degrees C out there
