Hi i have recently had my hba1c test, and have an appointment with the nurse in 2 weeks for follow up.
when you have this test , does it also test your fbc as well, or just for the glucose test.
thanks julie.

If they only ask for an HbA1c, you do not have to fast for that so it won't tell them anything except your HbA1c. I have just HbA1c test for my hospital appointments (plus other tests for other organs and bodily processes) whereas my annual diabetes MOT at the GP surgery it is a fasting blood test so I get both A1c and my 'on the spot' BG. Even though my test was at 'sparrow fart' (7.30am) and I hadn't eaten or drunk anything other than water that day - you can't say it was an FBG since it wasn't taken immediately on waking - I had to get up, kick my brain and body into gear, wash, dress, get in car (as passenger) and travel to the docs before they could take the blood. No idea what my actual FBG might have been - but my result from the blood taken at the docs was 6.7 which I am very happy about since I absolutely know after all these years that my BG rises from the moment my feet hit the floor and I dash to the loo - my waking thought every day of my life, I have to have my stretch sat on the loo these days!

But anyway if they report it - I wouldn't set that much store by whatever it says it is.

Its unknown what your nurse or doctor has requested. I get a full blood count every 6 months but that may be because of other health issues I have and medication I am on.

I think with diabetes, you should have liver and kidney profile done as well as HbA1C and urine sample test for protein leaching. When you see your nurse maybe ask to go on the Desmond course which will enlighten you what tests you should be having annually.

You can also self refer to the Xpert programme which I have found very informative and a great reference manual provided too.
