Hi
the last couple of days my blood sugars seem to have got out of control. when I got up today they were 10.5, I had 2 slices of toast and an hour later they were 21.7 I had a pie for my dinner and felt ill. I checked them an hour after the pie and they were 30.2. Any help would be greatly recieved

Hi @Benno Could you be ill? Illness can put blood sugars up.

Are you on any medication?

Hi. Those numbers are very high. Are you slim or have lost weight recently without trying? I ask as it's possible you could be late onset T1 if not overweight. Do keep an eye on those numbers and if you stay in the 20s or move to the 30s for long do call 111 or go to A&E. Keep the carbs right down - 1 slice of toast or none and not 2. Pies are bad news for us so beware. Check 2 hours after a meal and not 1 hour

Met for in and glicliziade

Ok - I’m not Type 2 but I think gliclazide can potentially cause hypos so you need to be cautious about changing your diet.

Keep testing regularly, and as suggested above, call 111 if your numbers remain high. Drink plenty of water.

Definitely give your nurse or GP a call tomorrow and get their advice re your dosages.

Well as a diabetic with already high sugars having toast (carbs) and a pie (carbs) wasn't the best idea, I'd highly suggest with levels like that you call 111 as that is dangerously high xx

Shoot from the hip, Kaylz. 🙂 But you’re quite right. Benno, these numbers are quite alarming and I wouldn’t hang around too long before getting medical advice.

nae point beating around the bush my dear, I wouldn't eat that as a Type 1 but that's just me I suppose, so much better food around that healthier xx

How long have you been diagnosed? Those numbers are way to high are you losing weight? The carbs you have eaten with those high numbers would make them higher still as well. If newly diagnosed I would wonder if you have been misdiagnosed and are in fact a type1 rather than a 2.

@Benno How is your blood sugar this morning? Have you managed to speak to a nurse yet to get advice? How are you feeling today?

Very naughty numbers @Benno take the advice of the members contact a HCP (Health Care Professional) asap and dump the toast and pies.

They were 12 I had an apple they went to 26. I’ve spoken to the nurse I’ve got to go for blood tests. Done a urine test no ketones, but traces of blood.

An apple is high in fructose, bread and pastry are high in starch - by eating them you are going to push up your levels just as you have seen.

Hi @Benno with levels that high it would be good to avoid high carbs, and keep them to an absolute minimum until things are sorted. Let us know hw you get on with the blood test. When is that booked for?

Hi and welcome from me too.

Maybe stick to eggs and meat and fish and veg until you get something sorted. What you are eating is not helping your levels but those numbers indicate there is something amiss and like others I think you may actually be a slow onset type 1 ( or LADA) rather than a type 2 diabetic and you are likely to need insulin. Hope you are able to get something sorted soon as those BG levels will leave you prone to infection, which in the current climate is an even less healthy situation to be in.

Try to avoid bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, noodles and breakfast cereals and even most fruits and fruit juice.... anything which is high is carbohydrate.... so both sugary and starchy foods.... at least until you get some medical help. Try things like gammon or sausages with cauliflower cheese and cabbage or stir frys with steak or chicken or omelettes with a salad and creamy coleslaw or roast chicken and veg or plain fish (not in batter or breadcrumbs) Something like salmon or sea bass pan fried in butter and served with broccoli or green beans or whatever other veg you like.

Good luck getting something sorted very soon as those levels are getting dangerously high.

Hopefully those blood tests will get done soon. You must be feeling rough with such high levels. Look after yourself and don’t be afraid to phone for more help if you feel really bad.

Fingers crossed that it will be sorted soon whatever the cause is.

This sounds very worrying for you @Benno

How long have you been diagnosed - like others I am wondering whether they may have mis-classified you as T2, when you may have been LADA or T1. Those BG reactions to carbohydrate are very extreme.

I hope you can get in touch with your GP for c-peptide or GAD tests to clarify your diagnosis, and get more appropriate treatment.
