Hi

I am still new to this testing and not so many carbs lark.. and am getting very varied results.. last night I was really pleased to have a post meal (Salmon parsley sauce two largish new potatoes and veg) of 6.6 so after that thought to myself Wow I am doing really well so today as it was the weekend I had two slices of toast and marmalade (don't usually do this) a boiled egg and then for lunch fish and chips (left the batter) in the pub with half a shandy. Have had fish and chips (half a portion of chips) before with no problems but today was shocked to have a 10.2 reading two hours later.

Feeling miffed as a result and cross with myself for being complacent.

I am guessing my levels were high before I started on the fish and chips from the naughty breakfast (usually have one toast not two or if I do have two have marmite and not marmalade).. I know the answer is to test more but my OH thinks I am becoming obsessed with it if I test more than once a day and his Mum is a type 2 and she told me I shouldn't be testing and so did the diabetic nurse but I know I need to test otherwise how will I learn what spikes me .

Is 10 a really bad level or am I doing ok? Most of the time my Blood Sugars are between 5 and 9 after meals.

A bit high but without knowing what you were before the meal it's impossible to say. If you were 5 before the meal and went up to 10 it's probably safe to say that meal is a no no for you but if you'd only risen by 3 probably not so bad. N.B.you may have been better with half a pint of beer rather than shandy unless the shandy was made with diet lemonade.

As @khskel says without knowing what your starting level was it's impossible to tell if it was an acceptable level or not, I would not listen to your husband, MIL or nurse if you want to test then go ahead that's the only way you will ever know for sure as you said x

Hi thanks

I did wonder if it may have been the shandy that pushed me up as it was more lemonade than beer and not diet. So next time I will have half a beer. (usually drink prosecco but not at lunchtime) I have had fish and chips before with no probs . Its a learning curve I guess.

The full sugar lemonade won't have helped Forgetful but it's more likely to be the fish and chips which caused a slight spike. Here's a chart of carb content.

It can be as high as 92 grams of carb dependent on size even though you say you didn't eat the batter. 10 is higher than desired but not desperate after that meal. You might not have chosen a carb heavy meal if you'd known your post breakfast level because 2 slices of toast is more than 30 grams of carb plus the marmalade.

It's your body, you have to live with the consequences of any diabetic complications so test when you need to not when others approve. Good luck!

Well you went well OTT with that brekky for starters - you know there are a fair few carbs in the toast - then you have twice the amount of toast AND spread them both with pure sugar - then for lunch poured liquid sugar down your throat followed by more carbs in the form of chips.

Refusing the batter is the only concession you made to your diabetes today.

Pfft - can't alter what you've already done so treat it as a lesson learned - not a stick to beat yourself with. You need to make yourself some rules here - if I'm naughty at breakfast - that doesn't mean I can - or have to - be naughty all day!

Now put your face straight (as my mother used to say to me when I cried after she'd either told me off or slapped my legs) and for heaven's sake - don't make me have to speak to you like that, again !

LOL

Ha ha that's me told!!!

I got complacent as I was SO good on Friday and my levels after dinner were only 6.6 (less than this morning after nothing but a cuppa I got 7) think I have learned my lesson. Its not going to go away!!

I totally understand about the testing. I bought my own monitor (type two, doing quite well, but needed to go lower) as it was the only way I was going to work out what made me spike and what to avoid after I had cut down or out of all the obvious culprits. It was the only way I found that I was extremely susceptible to potatoes, even a small portion. Test away but make sure you record what you ate so you can compare / work out what caused the spike.

Yes I have found the same.. really weird.. chips seem better than boiled spuds or mashed ? Think it is to do with the fat slowing the spike down but only half a portion at a time.. I think for me carbs are ok but only SMALL portions otherwise trouble! To be fair I don't eat spuds that much normally have a very small portion of pasta and NEVER more than two slices of bread and NEVER without protein too. So far that has worked for me unless I am silly like I was yesterday! I am obsessive about writing down what I ate and the result.

Forgot to add numbers good tonight.. 7.9 after small portion of potato salad more salad and barbeque beef!
