Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I'm a carer for a friend ( 85) with HbAiC 6.6. As my own reading is around 6.4 I've been a user of this site for 3 years, have read up on diabetes 2, and every year I do the Swim 22 fundraise. My query is: has anyone experienced the following: elderly person with 6.6 HbAiC who has had little breakfast , probably half a small mince pie at 8am, and is in Doc's waiting room for checkup 1 hour 11-12 midday, happy playing scrabble while we waited , then in space of 5 minutes feels headache , nausea, wants a cup of tea ( I gave apple juice which I had on me ) and in 10 minutes suddenly sort of collapses into what I think could have been blood sugar drop? Confused, headache, not with it at all. We got into the GP surgery after 10 mins, the elderly person was pretty confused, GP then gave the news that a recent blood test shows diabetes ( 6.6). I asked what about this sudden " collapse? , could it be low blood sugar?" GP said "oh no, that doesn't happen unless you are on insulin" . The elderly friend has bad memory problems, and has been diagnosed Mild Cognitive Impairment. After getting her home , where she collapsed onto couch, I kept her warm, gave cup tea, and then toast and soup, which is all she said she could eat. She perked up a bit about 30 minutes later. So my question is about what are symptoms of low blood sugar in the elderly? and at 6.6 could this have been a bit of a sugar drop? I shall of course be carrying more foodstuffs in case of a repeat of this, I cant always check if she had breakfast because she often cant remember if she ate or not.
