Blood sugar at 7.4 this morning...am I getting the hang of this?

As others have said, it sounds like you are doing fine, Bubbsie 🙂. Keep at it, do your testing, and you will find it very illuminating! If you like cooking and finding new recipes (I don't particularly) you'll find oodles online or in the food threads on these forums, and you don't need to be restricted in what you eat, just more imaginative!

As for type 2s testing....well, my GP and nurse are very supportive of my efforts, and I've been off Metformin since January, but even so my GP said last time I saw her, 'you don't need to test'....er, what? how did I manage to improve and stop medication then?? 🙄o_O
I

Hi Pine Marten...thank you...loved to cook...but since been on Metformin appetite very low...and no real interest in cooking...but still all good...weight is dropping off...as stated I find it frustrating that my GP also said 'no need to test' too...like you I am testing and learning so much from it...think it's all about the money...can I ask...were you worried about coming off the Metformin...

Thanks, Bubbsie. Actually I was very pleased to come off Metformin - because of my efforts last year my GP had reduced my dose to one a day from two, and then in January suggested stopping completely! I said, oh - er....oh...ok!

I went back in May for a check up on how I was doing, and it was fine, so I've just carried on with diet and exercise (not so much exercise lately because of the hot weather, which I'm not at all good with :(). I am determined not to go back to Metformin!

And you're right about the money, I bet....😱

Hi... I ask about the Metformin since at my last appointment with GP...gave him my latest readings...said doing well...another appointment in two months time and if still doing well may come off medication...at that time my reading was 8.8...surprised me...not sure I would want to come off it until they were lower...yesterday did well on waking 7.4...same again this morning...after breakfast up to 9.8...and ate the same as I did yesterday...puzzled...hate some of the effects of Metformin...the obvious ones...but not sure ready to come off it yet...

I can only speak for myself...but when I no longer needed Metformin I was bloody delighted!!! If you can get your numbers down and maintain control using diet/lifestyle changes alone then you're very fortunate. You only have to read this forum to appreciate that some people (especially the T1ers) have it really tough. You and I may have diabetes, but we're the lucky ones.

Whoa a second Marsbartoastie... either I haven't explained myself clearly enough... or you may have missed my point...want to stop using medication...however want to make sure I am at the right point to come off it...not able to say if just diet & exercise alone lowering blood sugar count...or if that and the meds...I have little experience...still find the prospect of managing Diabetes daunting...so just bear with me please...not offended by your reply...just a little surprised...

QUOTE="Strongbow, post: 627337, member: 15878"]Hi Bubbsie. I was in the exact same situation as you are about 3 months ago. My diabetics professional gave me metformin and told me to eat plenty of fruit and vegetables and try to exercise each day and that was it. Thank goodness I found this forum. I have been given some excellent advice from some very considerate people. Until I came on this forum I didn't even know about self testing, now I have found out a lot about my tolerances to different foods and my tests have been in single figures for the last month. Anyway welcome to the forum Bubbsie and the best of luck.

Hi Strongbow...like you some cursory advice from GP...then off on my own...so relieved to find this forum and the right literature (particularly this forum)...the advice ... support and consideration has proved invaluable...from the self testing to... diet...exercise...and the possibility I may still be able to enjoy a Gin & Tonic occasionally...I have had single numbers recently...so clawing my way through all of this...many thanks

Oh dear. I do understand where you're coming from and didn't intend to cause offence. I was simply trying (clearly in a kak-handed fashion) to offer you support and encouragement. Only you and your GP can make an informed decision about if/when you come off meds.

Hi Bubbsie, when I stopped Metformin my HbA1c was (can't quite recall without checking) 5.6 or 5.7 (= 38 or 39 in new money) and had been stable for a while, likewise BP and cholesterol etc. So I was happy with that. It is a marathon not a sprint dealing with diabetes, and sometimes it can be very frustrating, but long term it is definitely worth the slog!

This forum has been an absolute treasure, and I generally learn something new whenever I'm on it. You look as if you're doing all the right things, so keep at it, check in here for support and encouragement if you need it, and best wishes to you from another type 2 who has been through it! 😉

Oh please you haven't offended me at all...quite the opposite...I have appreciated your responses and support...and as for Kak-handed...I have a diploma in that...TBH sometimes I feel so confident I can manage this ...then suddenly the next moment I could just cry in case I mess it all up...don't believe my GP's ( who is quite good) advice not to test was right...and doesn't seem to be a diabetic nurse at his practice (haven't been told there is)...so just want to be absolutely sure he and I are getting it right...honestly I wasn't offended...since my diagnosis I am feeing quite vulnerable ( not used to that )...perhaps I am being too defensive...gosh there's an admission...🙂

Things can be very 'up and down' for a while (BGs and emotions). It takes time to come to terms with the new reality, but I'm sure you'll feel more settled soon.

Nice photo by the way. Graduating from...?

Agree with you entirely...I am very up and down at the moment...yes the old graduation photo...would love a more recent one...however being technologically incompetent ( as well as diabetic!!) it was the only one I could upload...determined to have a photo...every time my GP makes a referral while I am at his surgery he begins 'patient is a xx year old female'... want to shout at him every time he says that... so thought need a photo instead of a symbol (although nothing wrong with a symbol)...went to South Bank Law School ( London ) many many years ago...

Thank you so much...just the answer I needed...want to get off the medication...however want to do it when my BG levels are lower... and have been stable for a while...couldn't bear to come off meds...then have to go back on soon after...when do come off (feeling confident I will at some point) want to be able to sustain it for as long as I can...

It's a small world. I cycle past South Bank Uni almost every day.
You remind me that I need to post a photo. Unfortunately, the camera hates me...so finding one that makes me look half human is going to be tricky.

Blimey it is a small world...there are various sites for South Bank...when I was there our faculty was the one on London Road...lived in London most of my life...sold up and moved to Bedfordshire about two and a half years ago...we have a lot in common...the camera hates me too...I avoid them as much as I can...usually resemble Pat Butchers much older sister...

That Pat Butcher reference made me laugh out loud...and I'm supposed to be working :D
