Blood pressure was high on diagnosis and still high a couple of weeks ago. So I was given a digital monitor to take home for 48 hours of readings - average was 158/89 so was back at the GP today for an action plan.
She's given me Ramipril and started me on 2.5mg for the first 4 weeks (monitoring during this time - blood test for kidney function after 2 wks, BP check during week 3 and then again at the end of the 4th week when I see the Dr again) then she's expecting to increase the dose. She said she's likely to increase it in stages until we get to 10mg a day and will keep checking my kidney function & BP along the way .... I'll get an invite to the surgery Xmas party at this rate!
She didn't really cover when to take it though. She talked about a common side effect in terms of "if you're going to faint when you're on this, it's usually on the first dose, so if you get up in the night put the light on just in case". I assume that means I should take it at bed time?
Is anyone else on this who can advise me if there is a best time to take it?
Thanks!

Hi shopaholic.

Yes, you take it at bedtime. I've not noticed any side effects but I started taking it before my BP was raised for protective effects.🙂

Hi Mandy

Mum takes hers at bedtime, I remember the colour coding from her pill boxes!

I totally know what I'm getting you for Christmas 🙂

Could we go over to the BP machine at work a couple of times a week? We could meet up to walk over there beings as how you're *leaving me* sob

See you tomorrow rattle-y xx

Thanks Rob & Twinkle - I will take my first one tonight .....

And thanks Jane - looking forward to my surprise pressie and yes, walks to the health check machine sounds like a good idea!

Knew it was too soon to celebrate moving from weekly diabetic clinics to monthly ones - now something else to focus on instead - haha!

Can't wait til January when she's gonna start sorting out my cholesterol too! I think I'll tell her she can just throw it all at me rather than wait as I'm already in the deep end swimming about quite happily for now 🙂

xx

Trust us to be different ! Both hubby and I were told to take Ramipril in the morning with breakfast and were told to take statins at night. We've been advised of this both in Norfolk, when we started taking them, and in Somerset, where we are now.

Each 6 months (in additiion to seeing the Dr six-monthly for check-ups) our Boots Pharmacist goes through our pills with us individually - asking when we take them, do we know what they are for, have we had any side-effects etc and so far no-one's told us differently.

When I was on ramipril I was also told to take it at night, also my statin. I got side-effects when they started increasing the dose of reamipril though, so I was taken off it and put on candesarten - don't be afraid to go back if you don't get on with any pills as there are usually alternatives that may work better and without side-effects 🙂

Hi, I think when you are initially px ramipril you are supposed to take it at night (possibly to do with potential rapid BP drop for some) don't think it matters once you are established on it, best to check with pharmacist 🙂

Losartan lures KO for me. 76/127 this arvo, having recently rushed from the miles away carpark, I thought that was jolly good really. Esp as I only uncrossed me legs halfway through when I remembered !

??????????????

Sorry, v bad joke, ..... 'rules OK' .....

Hi Shopaholic. Your BP was about the same as mine when I started taking ramipril. Fortunately, while they expected me to be ramped up from 2.5mg to 10mg in stages, my BP seems to respond very well to the low 'starter' dose and I'm still on 2.5mg.

I take mine in the morning generally - my BP responds quite well to a couple of beers so ramipril plus beer before bedtime takes me a little too low for comfort!

Yeah, take both simvastatin and ramipril at night, i've read some research that ramipril at night is actually more effective than taken in the morning, however in my case it'd have to counteract the negative effect of forgetting to take my ramipril at night, which is no use to anyone.... Simvastatin works better at night too.

BP med split am/pm 3(3%/67%). Statin am. Have to head north (Manchester) in 10 minutes!
