Do people know there blood groups?
Is it right that if i ask my doctor they will know ?
Also is it uncommon for people to not know theres.?

Cheers.

I used to be a blood donor, so I know that my group is B+ 🙂 Not sure if your doctor will necessarily know your blood group though, unless there has been occasion to test for it specifically in the past. But I could be wrong! 🙄

So will someone somewhere know it though?

Yes, for you it's likely to be on record since you had a pregnancy.

I did ask what my blood group was but it seems it's either never been tested or there are no records.

Since I used to have a habit of fainting when giving blood for tests I've never been a blood donor. So I don't know it via that route either.

I dont know mine ,would like to though...............

Hi Steff will your gps receptionist give you info if you call and ask ? or if not the dr. If they don't know I presume they can take blood and get it tested for you?

I used to give blood I'm A negative

Steff,

Phone your GP surgery and ask the receptionist to leave a message for your G.P. You do not have to explain to him/her why you want it. It should be in your records somewhere. If they want more help with finding it then mention the dates of your pregnancy.

Ha! Me too.... B+ we are in the 9% club! 🙂

It used to be part of our science lesson to find out what blood group we were. Mind you I'm going back to the 1970's for this.

Yes, they did that in Switzerland too. We were told it would be a finger prick. But as I already knew my blood group A+, I didn't take part. I was glad I didn't, as it wasn't a finger prick, but a proper taking of blood from the arm😱

I'd love to know mine. No doctor or nurse has been able to tell me yet. I've had an op with general anaesthetic when I was 19 so should be there somewhere but things get lost in med records.

I remember we did it in biology in the 70's, having to use an indiviually wrapped lancet to prick our fingers, but one girl fainted in the lesson. I was the only one in our group brave enough to do it. Mind you, dare I mention I even enjoyed dissecting rats etc! Oh those were the days!

Thanks all for your various input
My o,h knows his as he was in the army and apparetly its mandatory....I will get in touch on Thursday with my GP.s receptionist as i know its the nice one that day 😛

I still give blood! LOL - for a special project now, though - you know the new measurement of A1c? - well all the labs have to be quality tested. So every 6 months 'we' give em an armful + some (more than the norm) and each person's bucketful is split up into 300 samples and sent off to 300 different labs - in UK, Europe and ?Mexico for an A1c. And they keep some to test themselves so they know what the answer should be. If it isn't within whatever the tolerance is, then they have to find out why and get it put right. 'We' never get to find out what it was, though one would imagine if it came up at 26 or something then perhaps they'd say something? - dunno!

AB+ here

By the way Di, I think T2's can now give blood anyway? - but in any event you could definitely give platelets.

Yes, some people with type 2 diabetes can give blood - it depends on how long they've been diagnosed, how well controlled, what medication they take etc, plus normal requirements for age, weight etc - see http://www.blood.co.uk/can-i-give-blood/who-can-give-blood/ for an online check list to check yourself - this applies to England and north Wales; other blood services operate in the rest of Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
