My blood glucose meter arrived today...woohoo! Anyway any tips from anybody on how to do a painless or as little pain as possible (I know I'm a wimp!) finger prick as possible. Also where would I be wanting my BG level to be sitting at to be considered as normal or good?
 
I'm a total wimp just at the thought of sticking needles into myself, but I have no trouble stabbing my fingers with the lancet thingy. I keep thinking it has misfired until I squeeze and then see a drop of blood!

Hurrah! You've got an Accu Chek, right? The finger pricker has different 'depth' settings, so pick the one that suits you - I have mine set to 2, which is enough to make sure I get some blood, but also doesn't hurt. The main tips are to make sure your fingers are clean, and also it helps if they are warm as the blood will flow more easily - run them under a warm tap if necessary if you are having problems. Prick the side of the finger pad, not the centre - there are more nerve endings at the centre so it will hurt more. Using the sides means you have two sides to each finger, but avoid the index finger and the thumb. I tend to use my little fingers. Another tip is, after you have pricked the finger, wait a couple of seconds before gently squeezing some blood. This is because on being pricked your finger's natural reaction is to close the wound, but waiting a couple of seconds relaxes it.

In an ideal world you would be between 4 and 7 before eating and no higher than 8.5 two hours after eating, but until you have some experience, don't worry if your numbers do not fit this perfect pattern - just note the numbers down and see if you can think of a reason for the high or low. 🙂
 
I got the Accu Chek Aviva. Comes with 10 testing strips, the finger pricker thingy, spare lancet drum and a wee carry case. Pretty good, but it came with lots of leaflets. I was a bit daunted at first at all the advice leaflets. I am going to start testing tomorrow morning and see what's going on before and after meals. Just not liking the thought of my poor fingers becoming pin cushions....after ll I do type all day. 🙂
 
Oh yes and the info leaflet suggest setting the finger pricker to 2. I will try that first.

Ha ha Steff he'd be too frightened I'd hit him if it hurt!!!!! Lol. Anyway decided to give it a try, save me chickening out come morning time. You should have seen me sitting with this finger pricker groaning oh no I don't want to do this.... I really am a wimp. Surprisingly it was pretty painless...I am impressed. 😛 anyway BG sitting at 7.9 just now. At least I know it works...whether or not 7.9 at this time of night is good.
 
Not utterly magnificent Cat, but by no means awful. It's just 'OK' but could do with being a bit less.

Might be what you had for dinner or the fact your BG was too high before dinner - or anything. You won't know until you can test in a pattern and work out what's happening where.
 
Eeeeek.....doesn't seem to get any better. I just checked this morning and my BG is sitting at 9.3. Guess that's not the best either 😱

Don't worry too much about these early readings Cat, things will improve as you learn more! 🙂 You've had a rise that many of us expect of about 1.5-2 mmol/l overnight. As you improve things generally, your bedtime reading will fall and then you will wake to correspondingly good waking readings! 🙂

Thanks Northerner I almost had a heart attack!!!:D considering my first ever fasting blood was 7.9, 2nd one was when they confirmed the diagnosis which was 8.4 and now the first I do myself is way up higher. There was me too trying to kid myself on that this diabetes diagnosis was probably wrong!! Alas it is not to be. Hey ho that's the denial done with, now to getting on top of these readings and finding out what my body is doing to me. Going to work armed and ready to test. :D
 
Well it's been a day of interesting meter readings. I got up this morning at 5.30am. Did a test and it was sitting at 9.3. I didn't eat anything until 11am. I did a test and it was sitting at 7.4. Waited for an hour after eating and it was way up to 12.1 😱 which was an hour befor lunch. I had lunch and an hour after that it was down to 5.5. Just about to have dinner and its at 6.8. I am baffled by all these up and down readings. Can I assume that the fact the I didn't eat till 11am is what caused the huge spike to 12.1? Daft question I know....

Not a daft question. For some people, if you don't eat in the morning then your liver will release some of its own stores of glucose and raise your blood sugar levels. In a non--diabetic person this would be 'switched off' if your levels got too high, but for us it can keep on going. What did you eat at 11 am though? This will most likely be responsible for the rise to 12.1 an hour later. It sounds like your pancreas kicked in a bit late and brought your levels down again to 5.5 and then you rose slightly to 6.8 before dinner.

I had Shreddies with semi-skimmed milk at 11am. I thought Shreddies was a healthy cereal.....wholegrain??? I've just had a nice healthy chicken salad for dinner will test in an hour and see where I am sitting.

I would say that the Shreddies were your problem, unfortunately. Most cereals, however 'healthy' they may be portrayed, are usually not a good choice for people with diabetes. They are usually high carb, and contrary to advertising, often hit the system quite quickly. I used to think Weetabix were good for you (and I love them!), but was shocked to see how quickly they raised my blood sugar levels :(

Don't despair though, you have already gained some valuable information about what Shreddies do to you. This is what testing is all about, so you can learn what you tolerate well and what you don't. 🙂

Seems so confusing. Funny enough I love Weetabix too and keep them in work. Might be worthwhile trying them tomorrow to gauge what effect they have. I always have cereal at 11am. So what cereals then are healthy apart from porridge?

I'm afraid that many people find any cereals a bad choice :( Some people are OK with porridge, others not. In the mornings you are often more insulin resistant so a lot of people try to keep carbs at a minimum at that time of day. I think I remember someone saying that Lizzie's Granola is OK, or perhaps you could try some plain yoghurt with berries and nuts?
 
I had the same trouble with Weetabix, they send my numbers through the roof and they used to be a big favourite. Most cereals do the same, with the exception of boring old oatmeal.
