Very interesting about the cake issue. I go to york now and again to the farmers market and have seen this stall but sadly came away empty as well. I have to make my own cakes now as I have to have wheat free gluten free and sugar free so it is especially hard for me to buy anything from a bakers shop. I live in hope that one day someone does think of those who have special diets and cater for them. I'll keep fingers crossed.

Another good blog entry SacredHeart.

Mmmm cake - definitely one of my downfalls. I'm a Type 1 diabetic with a very sweet tooth. In fact when I go out for a meal I often look at the menu in reverse, picking my pudding first, then my main meal and then my starter.

Very interesting point you make about the recipe being advertised as 'suitable for diabetics'. I remember there used to be a tendency to use fructose in diabetic baking as it was supposed to be better as it was sweeter than sucrose so that meant you didn't need to use as much.

But like you say a) it's still sugar, and b) theres still plenty of flour and butter/margerine which are carbs and fat which will raise your BG. Labels are often misleading, especially "low-fat" products which you would think are healthy and good for diabetics, but actually have loads of sugar to replace the flavour that is missing from removal of the fats. Also beware Thorntons "diabetic" toffee and sugar free Polo's as their sweetner can have a laxitive effect if you consume too much!

I'm also old enough to remember being on 2 "mixed" insulin (25% fast and 75%) slow and remember how excited I was when I got my first vial of NovoRapid so I could take a few units when I fancied a nice chocolate bar (or cake). Now I'm on MDI I can do this whenever I want!

Fingers crossed your treatment will be sorted out soon and you'll be able to get back to your beloved cakes 🙂

what a brilliant idea! I toyed with the idea of creating a medical blog for my diabetes and it's still boinging around my head. I'd just be scared no one would read it! I already have 2 blogs as it is. But I'll certainly be favouriting this!

Very good read.

I've recently started my own diabetes blog (diablog?) but I'm not quite brave enough to lose my anonymity on it yet!
