A quick reminder that this is the season to get out with a plastic box, and perhaps gloves to protect hands from thorns and colouring by juice, and collect blackberries. I've been going out to my local railway embankment, just 5 metres from my side gate, to collect blackberries each eveing to keep in fridge overnight for breakfast with yogurt and cereal.
I'll also collect a larger batch to make a blackberry and apple crumble to freeze in oven ready take away foil tray for when weather gets colder and I have visitors.
Free of charge, low sugar, tasty - what more could you want?

Haven't been blackberry picking for ages. We always used to go. Free fruit and people just leave it to rot. I've seen them for sale in Tesco. What's that all about!? 🙂

We are surrounded by blackberry bushes & have now completely stripped them. Got buckets of them now.

When I was young we always went Blackberry picking. A good walk & then out in the fresh air !😎

last two afternoon I have been picking these, had first batch with natural yoghurt, got loads today, just washed them & left them in a big tub in the fridge.
Might put some in a smoothie drink tomorrow & just eat the rest by hand

My daughter and I picked a few kilos yesterday. They look fantastic but I noticed a few very tiny caterpillar crawlies here and there. Will they be ok after a good wash and rinse and then boiled for jam?

That should certainly kill the crawlies. I thought putting them in a bowl of water would enable the die and float, you can than rinse them and boil the berries.

Don't forget to only pick berries above the doggie pee line.

Good advice ........ I think I got rid of the pests.

We have loads of blackberries in our garden, ive boxed some up and popped them in the freezer.

Has anybody tried making blackberry jam without sugar?

No, and I wouldn't try either. The point of sugar is to preserve the fruit. With no sugar, you'd have to keep jam in fridge. Considering the work involved in collecting blackeberries and making jam, I'd want it to last longer, and not take up fridge space.

I've picked and frozen blackberries in small quantities and was thinking of making small quantities of jam with some sort of artificial sweetener to be eaten over a short period of time with little need for preservatives. Don't know if it will work but I think I'll try it.

I have seen recipes using chia seeds to thicken the jam. Might try it sometime.
