I had my Regional DBN yesterday my HBAC1 was 80 i know it was Christmas but i thought i was good, i dont have breakfast was told by the hospital must have some so tried like the nuts and raisin thing apparently thats bad, the the upshot is now 4 injections a day, put my Lantus up to 38, if i have breakfast i need an injection with my lantus thats two also put up my day and evening Humalog im never going to beat this, oh by the way havnt had a drink and my DB got worse i dont get it, sorry for the moan

It's got to be a hard thing to take, but it's a setback, it doesn't mean that this is it forever. Diabetes is a real evil disease, and the longer you have it, the more ups and downs it'll be. You've done it once, you can do it again 🙂 🙂

For breakfast I generally have egg and bacon in the week from the staff canteen, and then weekends I have granola - it's not the lowest in carbs but some are high enough in fibre that it doesn't make too much of a difference. Try the Dorset brand granolas. They're actually quite tasty. And they don't have dried fruit so you avoid that sugar hit.

You will get there Simon. You need the insulin you need, it's just you haven't got the amounts quite right as yet but that will happen and your levels will improve with some tweaking and time. You're doing really well and keep hold of that thought 🙂.

My diabetes still hacks me off doing random things and I need to jiggle my insulin amounts, it's a work in progress thing and that's how I look at it.🙂

Take every day as it comes Simon. We are all here to help advise and listen. Rant and moan to us to your hearts content. Im not much help when it comes to the insulin side of things but plenty on here are. Read back through your blog as see how far you have come since you were diagnosed. Its an up hill marathon having this condition and we all have bad days and good days. Think of the positives (there are some somewhere). X

Hi Becks if i have breakfast it means another injection already on three i know i should

That's understandable for sure. Hopefully the new med combination will help you with this.

Will needing another injection depend on what you eat? Do you have to inject if you have bacon and eggs for breakfast?

Hi Ralph i never have time for eggs and bacon on a morning love them though, yes i would need ten units of Humalog and thats just after 38 units of Lantus hard to take two at a time not that i have done it but now have to start what a pain, see what i did there lol

The problem with missing breakfast is that your levels tend to rise on their own until you eat - a hangover from caveman days. But if that doesn't happen for you (you would have to do a few BG fingerpricks to check) then possibly you can get away with it.

In the morning I tend to have a low-carb yogurt plus nuts as that's reasonably low in carbs and the carbs it does have are slow (I don't have to do insulin, so that might not work for you).

I'm surprised you would have to inject for bacon and eggs! Things like that don't even shift my BG.

They're both carb free/very low, it's generally only if I have toast that I have to pay attention.

Please don't be disheartened, it can take a lot of fiddling about to get the insulins right, I'm on my 4th basal insulin. I often see 'it is a marathon not a sprint' on here to describe managing the D, very true!
See if you can go on a carb counting course, matching insulin to carbs is so more versatile than fixed amounts, if I have bacon and eggs I don't need to inject. You could also have a slice of Black Forest Gateaux!
I know not drinking has been difficult for you so you've done brilliantly on that score alone 🙂
If you put it into perspective, you've not been on insulin for long, you will get there.
I think we're all perfectly entitled to get pissed off with it all, so no need to apologise for the moan.

As you know, I've been having problems with absorption, so am expecting my hba1c to increase when I see my consultant next week, so expect a rant from me soon lol! Not to mention my quest for a pump 🙄
At least we can vent to each other on here to people who understand how hard it can be!
There is an online carb counting course on the site called BERTIE, perhaps check it out, see if it might help you 🙂

Hi simon.
Im very much in the same boat. I never used to have breakfast, then was told it was better to in order to stabilise sugars in the morning. But like you, i was thinking i dont want to have to inject again! Not everything will raise our levels i know, but just the thought of doing another jab puts me off food sometimes!
Ive just bought the carbs and cals book; great for carb counting with meals and actually seeing portion sizes.
'down' days happen for me. I have a day where i beat myself up, then im ok for a while.
Never feel bad for having a rant. We're all dealing with similar things here 🙂

This is exactly my point i guess i could sqeeze in a breakfast even though makes me feel a little sick not used to it but they say its good for you, i would have to take my Lantus and Humalog at the same time just hard to face, and also never done it so i dont know the affects, i am going to have to try it and see, think il wait until the weekend then i will have support.

I managed for a long time without having breakfast particularly. This is not to say i would starve, but i can not face food so early in the morning. I tend to snack around 10am.
Im not sure about all the insulins but guessing you have a rapid and a slow release type (24 hr one)? I inject my slow type at 9pm. I wondered if you were able to take yours at night to save double dosing in the morning?

Have a breakfast of sorts and a period of some exercise. As a Veteran I remember that not having breakfast was in fact a military offence! It is the on thing that sets you for the day. I sometimes have ham and poached eggs or berry fruit ( I am addicted to blueberries and extra thick cream). Its really hard at times keeping to the beat of this diabetes thing. I haven't had a "drink" for a year now. Boy its tough over celebrations and things like Christmas. I think the BIG thing is variety and planning your food regime, finding the things you really like and then putting a meal plan together that gives you things to look forward to? Suffering constipation at the moment myself. Every silver lining has a cloud. The most important thing is to stay POSITIVE.

I was advised by my diabetes nurse to take my slow release in the evening, i dont know why. Although i dont take as many units in one hit as you do.
It could be something to check out, if it helps with eating breakfast in the morning.
