Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi All,

My wife has just been diagnosed with T2 (not on any medication yet but testing sugars) and I'm a long term sufferer.

We have a GREAT doctor who is really forward thinking when it comes to diabetes and has suggested low carb diet.

Our problem is trying to make sense of BG readings; e.g. last night, before dinner my reading was 5.6 (lowest it's been in years) and then 2 hours after dinner, was also 5.6. This morning (with no food and only sips of water overnight) it was 7.7 - why the jump of 2.1 points? I know that BG readings can increase after meals (and also dependent on what you eat) but my wife did a reading one morning (think it was 8.8), had a black coffee, went on a 30min walk, came back and her readings went over 10! Don't understand how it would increase.

Are there any "rules" on how BG readings react to different conditions? If fasting, does BG readings go up as the body takes energy from stored fat? Can anyone shed some light on the behaviour of these readings?

Thanks

I’m Type 1 not Type 2, but there’s something called Dawn Phenomenon where your body releases glucose ready for the day. I know about this as I have to take extra insulin to counter it. There’s also ‘foot on the floor’ where your body releases more glucose as soon as you get up and get going.

So perhaps it was a combination of those things and a lack of breakfast. Eating can help stop the phenomena.

Hi, and welcome to the forum. I can do no better than refer you to one of our member's posts on another thread, where there’s an excellent explanation of the whole pancreas/liver relationship, and how they interact. Post #8 is well worth a read.
