At risk of diabetes
I joined this site a few days ago and have had lots of good advice so far so thanks to everyone x
I haven't got a diagnosis yet but HbA1c reading was 49. The GP wants to retest after 6 weeks and if still high then I will get a diagnosis. I will do everything possible to reduce this but think at best in 6 weeks I will still be pre diabetic?
I have gone on keto diet a few days ago, already lost 2lb a further 7lb will put me in healthy BMI range but I want to get to the mid point of BMI so more to lose.
Couple of questions - should I get a BG monitor to better understand my glucose levels? If so any recommendations?
Water - I do not nearly drink enough, my daughter always telling me off for this, I intend to change this but could this have made my HbA1c level higher? I have read that it could but wondered what others experience is of this?

Many would say, yes get a meter. I am not so sure. Meters have their place and are invaluable when you have a clear diagnosis of diabetes and your HbA1c is way beyond 48 and getting it down is much more important. Watching directly in the short term the effect of any changes you make is a powerful tool. Less clear is the case for the 42-48 HbA1c range. Using one would certainly be interesting for anybody who enjoys numbers but it is easy to start worrying about things which are quite normal.

Getting your BMI right is probably the best thing you could be doing and if you achieve your goals, there is a good chance that your HbA1c will be down next time. If it isn't, then maybe time for a meter.

As for the water thing. No idea but I doubt it has any effect on HbA1c.

Hi @Perfect10. I am very pro-monitoring because it helps keep me on the straight and narrow! However, my BG was 76 to start with, then down to 54 and I expect it to be <48 when I go back in a couple of weeks, so, as @Docb says, well over 48 initially.

I bought a SD Gluco Navii on recommendation from this forum, because the strips are (relatively) cheap. I keep a food diary as well so I know what spikes my blood and what doesn't.

It may be worth waiting until your next results before you fork out on a monitor, especially if you are already cutting out carbs on your diet.

Re water, I don't drink enough either, but I'm not aware that it affects my T2.

Good luck with losing your remaining 7lb. I wish I had only that much to lose! 🙄 x

you can monitor your Hydration levels by the colour of your urine, paly yellow/straw colour is good dark colour is bad, easy. If is easy to get obsessed with a meter, wait for a diagnosis.

I will wait for a diagnosis, I monitor water on a diet app I use and have increased this but still a bit more to go, thanks for replies.
