At risk of diabetes
For the second day now my BG has dropped slightly an hour after eating porridge with banana.

Yesterday: before eating 5.2; 1 hour later 4.3
Today: before eating 4.7; 1 hour later 4.5

When I eat anything else my BG rises after an hour, then falls back a bit after two hours but still above fasting, then is back to fasting levels after about three hours or so. (I think. I'm still new to this.)

Is this normal? Should I do anything about it?

No idea if it's normal for others Gina...but...just shows you how individual diabetes is...some here tolerate bananas (and many other foods) really well...others find they rise their BG...so...clearly porridge/banana is a plus food for you...keep on experimenting with what's manageable for you...clearly getting to grips with this diabetes/testing 'lark'...well done.

Thank you!

It all just seems so strange right now.

The encouraging thing is that it looks like it will be manageable purely by diet if I can stick to it. I'm so grateful for your (and everyone's!) help.

It is strange Gina...not everyone starts the day sticking 'needles' in their fingers...waiting for that little 'dictator' to tell us if we're off with a good start to the day...after a short while you won't even think about it...be a bit like putting the kettle on when you get up in the morning...part of your routine.

Porridge lowers my blood levels slightly in the mornings too. But I cant eat bananas anymore. :(

Okay...that's confirmed...porridge for breakfast tomorrow morning it is then!

Ooh, we've got blueberries! That's a good idea!

Porridge is quite slow to go through your digestive system, maybe that has something to do with it, it will take a while to reach your blood stream. Whenever my daughter eats porridge, we have to extend her insulin bolus by at least an hour and a half, or she will go hypo because the insulin will be working faster than the porridge is being digested. For most other foods we can just whack the whole dose straight in without problems. Not everyone is the same though, some people can't tolerate any cereal any more after they are diagnosed, some people find they can tolerate porridge or weetabix but not others, other people find different ones work better. You just have to keep experimenting and find what works best for you.

Maybe it's the slowness that does it then - because things get back to normal again later on. It sounds like I'm lucky that porridge doesn't push the BG up!
