I have spent a while looking back through posts and it know there was a recommendation by either Northerner or Everydayupsanddowms(I even worked out how to just look at their posts!) but have reverted to a new post as I did not find what I was looking for.

I am now starting to look at reducing carbs to reduce the spikes. There was a reference to a book recommended by Adrienne and I know that there was either an article or book with so,e recommendations about this.

I know that this part needs to be about 1/4 of the meal (we have probably done about 1/2 before) so just looking for ideas. I have already made a note of the ideas in swap, drop, add reduce, which are excellent. But any other recommendations very welcome.

I'll preface my post by saying, I'm not a T1, and therefore haven't faced the challenge of juggling food/insulin/exercise/lifestyle etc., but when diagnosed, I tried to keep things really simple.

Initially we cut the carbs, and just did more veggies, but eventually we wanted to expand the routine portfolio of meals we would eat. As my OH and I promised we would always eat the same main meal (we find we talk around the dinner table, and eating/communing is really important to us), as otherwise we would lose something from our lives together. MrB has been happy to low carb at main meal times, to a large extent, but if he really fancies something carby, we'll often just Google "Low Carb whatever it is he fancies", and we usually come up with something delicious Googled in this way, most of the sites have carb counts on them, which is also helpful.

I use:
Ditchthecarbs
sugarfreemom
Shecookssheats
Feistyveggies
Mariamindandbody

... And many others. There is so much out there I haven't found any requirement to buy books.

Seconded for Ditch the Carbs - http://www.ditchthecarbs.com/recipes/

Just as a note, there is no specific reason why you actually need to include any carbs at all as long as you aren't on a mix insulin. That doesn't mean you should never eat carbs - just that you shouldn't ever get hung up on ensuring you always have a specific proportion of carbs on your plate.

It is true that your brain does require glucose to run BUT you do not need dietary carbohydrate to provide that glucose.

Thank you both for the info.

Unfortunately I just like all the carby things.
So lower is going to be more realistic than low.

So it is Carribean butternut squash and sweet corn stew tonight with half the rice we normally do.
OH cooking and sounds like a good start.

I shall watch out for the spikes and see how we get on.

It is habits that I need to change. I feel that I can cope with tackling one or two things but sometimes it just feels like there is a lot to monitor, measure, ... But then there is and that is not going to change. So looking for yumminess whilst we try to be more sensible.

Carbs and cals is a good book for telling you how many carbs are in foods but, the mobile app is brilliant as you can get the exact amount of carbs in a meal.

I like Hemsley and Hemsley if you can get over the slightly faddy stuff about soaking nuts (I don't so that). They're not specifically low carb really but most of their recipes are moderate to low carb. They don't put any carb values on recipes which is deeply annoying but I can work that out myself (she says grumpily). They've got two books out at the minute. My favourites of theirs are the garlic quiche (made with almond pastry), flower power pizza and the coconut dream bars and a lot of those are available on their blog. I too often just google lower carb X or Y and see what comes up. The reason I suggest the H&H book is there's some easy swaps in there for traditionally high carbs items. If you find any good recipes let us know :D

Oh and I made the pizza from Ditch the carbs that Pat.y posted about earlier about an hour or so ago. Lovely it was too, and even went down well with non insulin challenged guests :D

I haven't missed any carbs, and I loved my chips.🙂 Don't even think about chips now, but they can be successfully made using celeriac. Courgetti replaces pasta & cauli rice replaces normal rice.
