Hi Guys,

I have been reading on this forum people writing that if you are on insulin you lose your HGV licence. I don't believe this is the case, i currently carry licence to drive:

am, a1, a2, a, b1, b, b+e, c1, c, c+e, d1, b1+e.

i did however lose my D and D+E licence, this is PCV over 16 people.

Admittedly have to jump through the usual hoops, and i have to have a medical yearly.

Is this usual?

Details are here: https://www.gov.uk/diabetes-driving

It depends partly on when you got your right to drive various classes and when you started on insulin.

Usual hoops are pretty onerous - downloadable blood glucose meter to be checked by medical professionals, strick limits in hypoglycaemic episodess requring help from another person etc. Some people get caught out by accidently ticking the wrong yes / no box, resulting in loss of licence. Getting a licence back is even harder than hanging onto exisiting entitlements.

Hi, i lost my entitlement for my HGV when i had to renew my car licence which is every 3 years. With out warning they took away C & CE. When i asked why is had happened they just said i needec to fill out a blue medical form. I had the licence from 87 and they only took it from me in 2010. My diabetes has been well controlled. They just tar everyone with the same brush. And not on individual merits.

Welcome to the forum, ulsterman.
You can get back some entitlements, IF you can jump through hoops of providing download of meter data, have no hypos needing assistance and pay for medical examination. See link I gave above.
Ask away, not just about driving / DVLA - some other aspects of life with diabetes are not so limited with the right approach.
