Hi Steff I'm so glad to hear your appt went well and you left feeling good about things. Wish you well with starting on insulin. You certainly sound confident which must help enormously getting used to the new regime. 🙂

Hi Pav,
Good luck for April, well fridge is now full of giant cous cous med veg sweet potato and natural youghurt. Must admit to feeling a tad woozy this morning head was aching me till about 10am x

I'm injecting insulin too - Humalin 10 units before breakfast and 6 before the evening meal, upped on Monday after ten days on 8 units then 4.

I was told to shake the pen 20 times before inserting the needle, which I do for a full pen, esp as I keep it in the fridge. I think it probably doesn't need so much shaking as it is getting empty.

I think thats whats been suggested to me if this one dose a day at evening meal dont improve. I am gonna stick to rolling it in in my hands it worked ok last night.I keep the one im using out of the fridge on the side as nurse said im ok to do that.

Thanks Lindarose most kind of you x .

Have you tried mashing cauliflower with butter or cream with cheese, then under the grill to brown & crisp, as an alternative to potatoes? Or cauliflower rice to accompany stir fry, homemade bol sauce or any other meal that takes your fancy?

Oops, so sorry for intruding on this thread:(

Thanks Steff, it's taken 5 tries to type your name...flippin predictive text was insisting it should be Sheffield!!! 😡 Anyway, forgot to mention ... after mashing cauli & seasoning it, I put it in ramekins then under the grill....you know ..... it's all about portion size!!!🙄 oh and its best to cook cauli for only about 4-5 mins otherwise it goes sloppy! Why not try using a fresh cauli for that recipe? Enjoy your cauli-rice tonight :D

Well you know im prelific in Sheffiled LOL.
Ah ok I do love the sound of this as an alternative.

Thank you

Well after being quite rough since the insulin I finally caved in and asked for a call back from my doctor, after a short discussion she has upped my dose to 12 units (thank you pumper sue you got in there before my doctor even did hehe)told her my bloods have been wild I am waking with bs of 17 sometimes and thats me testing before i have even eaten anything that day so I shall take a forum members advice and do a 2am test now.. Doc is gonna check in with me Thursday , she said gradually we may just need to go up 2 units a time for first few weeks until im settled.

Errrr, put hers out and then grind it over yours, or add it on yer plate!

I don't like mustard on my steak - doesn't stop us both having it and enjoying it exactly the way we each like it.

Meanwhile - we both simply dislike the taste of sweet potato itself LOL

Q: When I was first taught how to use NPH insulin, I was told to roll the vial between my hands ten times before drawing the insulin. Why?

A: Certain types of insulin: NPH, Lente, and Ultralente insulin, look cloudy in the vial. They look cloudy because particles of insulin are not fully dissolved. When the insulin bottle or pen sits still for a few minutes, the particles of insulin settle out, and fall to the bottom of the container. Before you draw the insulin, you need to gently mix it up so the whole bottle has the same concentration of insulin all the way through. If you carry prefilled syringes, and they have any of the above "suspension" insulins in them, you'll need to gently agitate them, too, for the same reason. Otherwise, you would get different concentrations of insulin when you draw the clear part than when you draw the part that contains the settled particles.

Rolling the insulin between your hands is a good way to mix insulin in a vial without making a lot of little bubbles in the insulin itself. If you shake the insulin and mix in a lot of bubbles, they will not hurt you. But you might end up with little bubbles of air in your syringe, and that would mean you would not get your full dose of insulin.

Q: When I started using an insulin pen with an NPH mixture, I was taught to mix the insulin by rolling the pen ten times, and then pointing the pen up and down ten times. Is this really necessary? Why?

A: Research has shown that insulin in pens is a little harder to mix than insulin in vials. There are no air pockets to help the mixing process. When people roll the pens in their hands, the insulin can still have layers that are not completely mixed. But there is a tiny glass ball that rolls back and forth when the pen is pointed up and down. By doing this ten times, you may be sure all the layers of insulin are thoroughly mixed.

Thanks Lilian, one worry I did have when i first injected was am i getting the insulin when i put needle in me, but now I can see clearly as the plunger goes down less and less insulin is in the vial.
Further on from thread Monday, the lovely Doc called me back 12.30 , told her improvments since then but still my mornings readings although better are still high wanting me to have readings between 5 and 7 on morning, so upped insulin to 14 units now and im fine with that. Have appointment with her on 28th March so unless any more concerns Ill see her then.
